JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Tbk, or BBRI, booked Rp 26.53 trillion ($1.63 billion) in net profit for the first half of 2025, down 11.25% from a year earlier, as higher provisioning and adjustments in its insurance business weighed on earnings.
The bank’s total lending reached Rp 1,416 trillion ($87.05 billion) during the same period, up 6% year-on-year from Rp 1,336.8 trillion. Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) remained the core of BRI’s strategy, contributing Rp 1,137.84 trillion, or 80.32%, of its credit portfolio.
In a performance briefing on Thursday, May 31, 2025, President Director Hery Gunardi said the bank’s strategy to boost low-cost funding (current and savings accounts) had helped support efficiency and long-term business sustainability.
Provisioning, Insurance Dampened Bottom Line
In its financial statement filed to the stock exchange on Thursday, July 31, BRI said its profit decline stemmed primarily from early-year provisioning and a drop in fee income. It also booked adjustments related to its insurance segment that impacted revenue recognition.
Despite the headwinds, BRI recorded a 2.6% year-on-year increase in interest income to Rp 102.37 trillion. Interest expense also climbed 2.07% to Rp 29.1 trillion, resulting in a 2.8% rise in net interest income to Rp 73.27 trillion.
However, operating costs weighed on results. Labor expenses rose 5.34% to Rp 21.73 trillion, pushing operating profit down 9.2% to Rp 35 trillion. This contributed to the overall decline in net earnings.
Improving Asset Mix and Intermediation Yield
Credit and financing growth improved in the first half, supported by a stronger mix of low-cost funds. BRI’s management said this combination enhanced yields from intermediation activities — the bank’s primary business line. Total assets stood at Rp 2,106.37 trillion ($129.45 billion) as of end-June.
Earlier this year, BRI also reported distributing Rp 83.38 trillion in People's Business Credit (KUR), a government-subsidized loan program for MSMEs, with agriculture remaining the dominant sector.
