JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the government to convert Galang Island in Riau Islands province into a humanitarian medical center for 2,000 war victims from Gaza, Palestine, according to Presidential Communication Office Chief Hasan Nasbi.
“President Prabowo has directed Indonesia to provide medical treatment for 2,000 Gaza war victims. A dedicated treatment center will be prepared on Galang Island,” Hasan said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2025.
The patients will include both the injured and their accompanying family members, he added. Galang Island was chosen due to its existing medical infrastructure, particularly the former Covid-19 emergency facility that once treated thousands of patients during the pandemic.
“From a safety and comfort perspective, the location is manageable,” Hasan noted.
He emphasized that this initiative is not a permanent relocation or evacuation program. “This is a humanitarian operation. Once they recover, they will return to Gaza,” he said, clarifying the scope of Indonesia’s assistance.
Galang Island previously housed the Special Infection Disease Hospital (RSKI), established during the Covid-19 crisis. The facility served over 7,200 patients, including both Indonesian citizens and foreigners from countries such as Singapore and Malaysia. Following the pandemic, the hospital has been repurposed to treat infectious and emerging diseases.
The humanitarian initiative comes amid worsening conditions in Gaza, where war-related casualties have exceeded 55,000. Indonesia’s move to provide temporary medical shelter and treatment reflects its long-standing support for the Palestinian people and adds a new dimension to its medical diplomacy efforts in the region.
