BADUNG, Indonesia – Megawati Soekarnoputri has been reaffirmed as the Chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) for the 2025–2030 term during the party’s Sixth National Congress held in Bali on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025.
The event, held at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center, gathered party elites from across the country, including the heads, secretaries, and treasurers of provincial (DPD) and regional (DPC) chapters, as well as the central executive board (DPP).
The reaffirmation came swiftly and unanimously, with 100% of delegates endorsing Megawati’s continued leadership shortly after the congress began. According to Komarudin Watubun, Chair of the Congress Steering Committee, the process was expedited since Megawati had already been selected during the party’s National Working Meeting (Rakernas).
“Since she was already chosen at the Rakernas, the congress merely ratified it. The Rakernas itself is not a forum to elect a chairperson,” said Komarudin. “We actually planned to run until 11 p.m., but the endorsement came quicker than expected.”
The congress, held behind closed doors since 2 p.m., was attended by key party figures including Megawati’s daughter and Speaker of the House Puan Maharani, and her son Muhammad Prananda Prabowo, alongside other senior leaders.
Hasto’s Absence from New Leadership
The PDIP also unveiled its new central board for the 2025–2030 period during the congress. Notably absent from the lineup was Hasto Kristiyanto, the party’s long-serving Secretary-General, who was recently released from detention following a presidential amnesty from President Prabowo Subianto.
Megawati has opted to keep the secretary-general position under her control for now.
“The secretary-general position hasn’t been decided. Ibu [Megawati] is still holding it concurrently,” Komarudin said during a press conference.
The announcement was followed by a swearing-in ceremony for the newly appointed board members, which include prominent politicians such as Puan Maharani, Ganjar Pranowo, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, and Tri Rismaharini.
Megawati appeared emotional during the congress, particularly when Hasto approached her in person. Photos captured the PDIP chairwoman in tears, underscoring the personal and political gravity of the occasion.
