JAKARTA, investortrust.id —
Microsoft has confirmed a Rp 27 trillion investment to develop artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure in Indonesia, reinforcing the country’s ambitions to emerge as a regional digital powerhouse. The move underscores Indonesia’s rising profile in Southeast Asia’s tech landscape, driven by government policies that prioritize digital competitiveness and infrastructure readiness.
The commitment was formalized during a meeting between Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid, Deputy Minister Nezar Patria, and President Director of Microsoft Indonesia Dharma Simorangkir at the Ministry’s office in Jakarta on Thursday, April 17, 2025.
“Digital transformation is a direct mandate from President Joko Widodo,” said Meutya, referring to Indonesia’s former head of state whose term ended last year. The initiative began during his administration and is now being continued by the current government. “The government is committed to supporting it through policies that enhance Indonesia’s competitiveness.”
She also highlighted the need to increase public literacy on artificial intelligence, stressing, “AI is not just a visual trend or entertainment—it’s about delivering tangible benefits and success stories that inspire.”
Deputy Minister Nezar Patria emphasized that strong and adaptive regulation remains the foundation of a sustainable digital ecosystem. “We are developing a data management framework under the Government Cloud initiative, based on principles of governance and national data categorization, even though it is not entirely government-owned,” he explained.
According to Dharma Simorangkir, the investment forms part of Microsoft’s global commitment, previously conveyed directly to President Joko Widodo. A major component includes establishing a new cloud region in Indonesia, which is expected to serve both domestic needs and international companies operating in the country.
“The launch of the cloud region will coincide with the Microsoft AI Tour in Jakarta on May 27. This is more than a technology rollout—it is a declaration of Indonesia’s readiness to be a strategic player in the global AI ecosystem,” said Dharma.
Beyond data center development, Microsoft is also exploring partnerships in research and the co-creation of digital products by local developers. The goal is to foster homegrown innovation that can compete on the international stage.
