JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — Amazon Web Services (AWS) has confirmed it has invested $5 billion (Rp71 trillion) in Indonesia since 2021, reinforcing its long-term commitment to supporting the country’s digital transformation through cloud infrastructure and workforce development.
The announcement was made by Country Lead AWS Indonesia Anthony Amni during a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, Aug 7, 2025. “AWS believes in Indonesia’s enormous potential. This commitment is reflected through concrete investments,” he said.
Since entering the Indonesian market, AWS has focused on building a local cloud infrastructure region while expanding digital literacy initiatives. The company has trained more than one million Indonesians in digital skills through partnerships with vocational schools, Islamic boarding schools, and universities.
According to AWS, its local infrastructure and operations are projected to contribute up to $10.9 billion to Indonesia’s gross domestic product, in line with the government’s ambition to scale up the country’s digital economy.
AI Holds Promise—but Talent Gap Persists
AWS also emphasized the importance of accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) adoption across Indonesia’s business landscape. It cited Halodoc, a health-tech platform, as a successful case study—using AWS AI tools, Halodoc has halved the time needed to process insurance claims.
Despite growing interest, AI adoption in Indonesia remains in its early stages. A study by consultancy Strand Partners revealed that 76% of businesses are still at the beginning of their AI journeys. The biggest barriers, according to the report, are the lack of specialized digital training and a shortage of skilled professionals.
“This isn’t just a challenge for startups,” said Strand Partners Director Nick Bonstow. “Manufacturing and logistics companies are also struggling to find AI-capable talent.”
To address this, AWS is expanding its collaboration with Indonesian firms including Telkomsel and Halodoc to deliver advanced training in AI and cloud technology. “We understand we can’t do this alone. The more collaboration across sectors, the broader the impact,” Anthony said.
