Prabowo and Anwar Ibrahim Agree to Strengthen Indonesia-Malaysia Strategic Cooperation
JAKARTA, Investortrust.id – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met at the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, and agreed to strengthen strategic cooperation across various sectors, including the economy, energy, and defense.
In the warm and constructive meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing synergy between the two closely connected nations. Prabowo emphasized the deep cultural and historical ties between Indonesia and Malaysia, highlighting their shared heritage.
“We share a history, blood ties, and cultural connections. Many Malaysian leaders even have family ties in Indonesia. This unique relationship should further strengthen the bond between Indonesia and Malaysia,” said Prabowo.
Energy, Trade, and Investment
A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement to bolster collaboration in the energy sector. Anwar Ibrahim stressed the importance of strategic cooperation between Malaysia's Petronas and Indonesia's Pertamina, with a focus on exploring new initiatives and enhancing bilateral energy transfers.
“Our commitment is to ensure strong collaboration between Petronas and Pertamina, enabling both companies to explore new opportunities and facilitate cross-border exchanges,” said the Malaysian Prime Minister.
The leaders also discussed trade and investment partnerships, particularly in the palm oil industry, a critical commodity for both nations. As the world’s largest palm oil producers, Indonesia and Malaysia account for 80% of global output.
“When I visit other countries, such as Egypt, India, and Pakistan, they often express their need for palm oil. I believe we can do a lot together, and I appreciate Malaysia’s continued support in this sector,” Prabowo added.
Defense and Regional Cooperation
Defense cooperation was another priority, with Anwar Ibrahim acknowledging Indonesia’s extensive experience and strength in the sector. Both leaders committed to leveraging their combined resources to enhance regional security.
“Both parties agreed to mobilize all available resources, including in defense, where Indonesia has considerable expertise and capability,” Anwar said.
On regional issues, the leaders pledged closer coordination to address geopolitical challenges. They also reaffirmed their aligned stance on Palestine, emphasizing the need for a two-state solution.
“We are united in supporting Palestinian independence. The only solution is a two-state solution,” Prabowo stated firmly.
Concrete Implementation Plans
The meeting concluded with a commitment to accelerate the implementation of agreements through intensive coordination between the relevant ministries in both countries. Anwar underscored the importance of taking concrete steps to ensure the success of these partnerships.
“We have given clear instructions to the relevant departments and the private sector to take corrective actions and ensure that what has been agreed upon is implemented without delay,” he said.
This high-level meeting reflects the shared determination of Indonesia and Malaysia to deepen ties and advance mutual interests across critical sectors.
