JAKARTA, Investortrust.id – Indonesia and Vietnam have agreed to strengthen their bilateral relations by elevating their partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Among the sectors set for deeper collaboration is fisheries, particularly in the development of lobster, tuna, and seaweed aquaculture.
The enhanced cooperation was formalized through the signing of an Implementing Arrangement (IA) between Indonesia’s Directorate General of Aquaculture at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and Vietnam’s Directorate of Fisheries and Surveillance under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The signed document was later presented to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Secretary-General of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Tô Lâm at the Presidential Palace.
Expanding Fisheries Collaboration
"This strengthened partnership brings us closer to our shared goal of making Indonesia and Vietnam the leading producers of fisheries products in the region," said Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono in an official statement on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
Under the agreement, both countries will exchange information on aquaculture regulations and data, strengthen cooperation in aquaculture technology, fisheries trade, and market development, as well as promote investment and partnerships between businesses in the fisheries sector.
The partnership also includes education and training initiatives, such as government and scientist exchanges to build human resource capacity in aquaculture development.
Joint Working Group and Implementation
To oversee the implementation, Indonesia and Vietnam will establish a Joint Cooperation Working Group, which will meet at least once a year to review progress and formulate strategic next steps.
The agreement is valid for five years from the date of signing, with the possibility of extension upon mutual written agreement.
Before the official signing ceremony at the Presidential Palace, Minister Trenggono and Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien held a bilateral meeting at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries office. Their discussions centered on collaborative efforts to develop aquaculture in Indonesia.
"We are committed to managing our fisheries resources sustainably. Our potential is vast, and we aim to maximize it for economic growth while ensuring ecosystem sustainability," Minister Trenggono stated.
