Government to Provide Discounts on Airfare and Sea Travel for Eid 2025
JAKARTA, investortrust.id - Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, also known by his initials AHY, announced that the government will provide discounts on airplane and ship ticket prices to accommodate travel during the Eid holiday in 2025.
“We are working to lower airline ticket prices, along with other modes of transportation. I recently visited Pelni, as many Indonesians rely on passenger ships, particularly for areas without airplane access and for more affordable travel options,” Agus said during a press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. Pelni is Indonesia’s national shipping company.
Agus said that the government, through the Ministry of Transportation, has prepared several measures to address potential challenges during the Eid holiday, particularly congestion at major transit points like Merak Port in Banten.
“Our focus is on ensuring safety and comfort. Traffic congestion, especially at key locations such as Merak Port for travelers heading to Sumatra, needs to be addressed. Buffer zones have been prepared to manage vehicle accumulation,” he stated.
Agus also noted that the government had learnt from the transportation patterns observed during the Christmas 2024 and New Year 2025 (Christmas) holiday period. According to records, approximately 94.67 million people traveled during the period, accounting for 225.86 million movements.
Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi highlighted the decline in mobility during the Christmas period, with a 24.92% year-on-year decrease compared to the previous year.
“The realization of travelers during Christmas 2024-2025 was 14.46% lower than our survey estimates of 110.67 million people. It also marked a 24.92% decline from the 126 million recorded during Christmas 2023-2024,” Dudy said.
Factors such as weather conditions, lack of travel permissions, insufficient funds, and the proximity of the Eid holiday in March 2025 contributed to the lower travel numbers, he explained.
Despite the overall decline in holiday travel, several transportation modes experienced growth. Road transportation recorded 3,736,389 passengers, an increase of 6.85% year-on-year, while train services carried 4,088,680 passengers, marking a 6.76% rise.
Sea transportation saw a 7.43% increase, with 1,673,737 passengers utilizing this mode. Air transportation experienced the highest growth, with 4,883,625 passengers, a 10.76% jump from the previous year.
In contrast, crossing transportation, managed by PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry, a state-owned enterprise in Indonesia responsible for managing ferry transportation services, recorded a decline, with 2,799,867 passengers, down 8.47% year-on-year.
Dudy also noted a slight decline in vehicle traffic through toll roads out of Jakarta during the last Christmas holiday, with 6,131,938 vehicles recorded, a 1.12% drop from 6,201,130 in the previous year. Meanwhile, vehicle traffic on arterial or non-toll roads increased by 2.63%, reaching 20,646,570 vehicles compared to 20,118,118 in 2023.
“These patterns provide valuable insights for planning and improving transportation strategies during the Eid holiday,” Dudy concluded.
