Sumatra Disaster Death Toll Climbs to 1,129 as Jakarta Pledges Cash Relief

JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — The Indonesian government has authorized a significant cash relief package for families displaced by a string of devastating flash floods and landslides across northern and western Sumatra. As of December 25, 2025, official data reveals the humanitarian toll has reached 1,129 fatalities across 52 impacted regencies and cities.

The policy was finalized following a high-level strategy session on Wednesday between Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya and Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf. The administration is prioritizing direct financial liquidity as a critical tool for maintaining household resilience in emergency zones where traditional livelihoods have been swept away.

"For our brothers and sisters in Sumatra, every affected or displaced family will receive a minimum of Rp 8 million," stated Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. "This includes Rp 3 million for household contents and Rp 5 million for economic recovery."

Humanitarian and Infrastructure Impact

The scale of the catastrophe is underscored by the latest figures from the national disaster recapitulation dashboard. Beyond the confirmed deaths, authorities are still searching for 174 missing individuals, while approximately 7,000 people have sustained injuries.

The physical destruction across the three provinces has reached a staggering scale, with 157,838 homes reported damaged or destroyed according to the latest government data. The impact on critical infrastructure is equally severe, as the region grapples with the compromise of 1,900 public facilities and 734 bridges.

Essential services have been crippled by the disaster, which has damaged 875 educational facilities and 200 health centers, significantly hindering immediate recovery efforts. Furthermore, the loss extends to the heart of local communities, with 806 houses of worship and 291 government offices or buildings currently listed as damaged.

A Layered Relief Strategy

The government clarified that the cash disbursement is distinct from ongoing emergency provisions. The relief package is earmarked for household essentials and family-level economic stimulus, provided in addition to monthly rations of 10 kilograms of rice and food stipends.

"These funds are separate from the 10 kilograms of rice per month, food allowances of Rp 300,000 to Rp 450,000, the construction of temporary and permanent housing, and 'housing waiting money' of Rp 600,000," Secretary Teddy explained.

For those who suffered the ultimate loss, the Ministry of Social Affairs has established fixed compensation rates. Families of the deceased will receive 15 million rupiah in bereavement payments, while individuals who sustained severe injuries are entitled to Rp 5 million.

"All of these compensation funds will be distributed directly by the Ministry of Social Affairs based on data and approval from each local regent or mayor," added Secretary Teddy.
