Prabowo Subianto Oversees Rapid Growth of People’s Schools, Targets 200 by 2026

JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — President Prabowo Subianto has said he did not expect the construction of People’s Schools to progress as quickly as it has. In just five months since he first announced the initiative in February 2025, more than 100 schools have been built and are already running classes.
Prabowo made the remarks when opening the “Training for Teachers and Principals of People’s Schools” at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta, on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025. He emphasized that the milestone was the result of hard work by his Cabinet Merah Putih, which managed to deliver one of his top education priorities.
“This is beyond my expectations, to build 100 schools in just five months. Next year, God willing, we will have 200 schools and then more after that,” Prabowo said.
The government has set a target for 200 People’s Schools to be fully operational by 2026. Prabowo praised ministers and institutional leaders, noting that their ability to exceed expectations reflected a strong combination of hard work and innovation.
“Thank you to the leaders, to the ministers who have worked beyond what I expected. You worked hard, with spirit, but also smartly. This is 100 schools, soon it will be 163,” he remarked.
Alongside building new People’s Schools, the government has also pledged to improve the quality of existing state schools to ensure equal access to education across the country.
Education as a Path Out of Poverty
Prabowo stressed that education is a decisive factor in building a resilient future generation. He argued that Indonesia’s control over its natural resources must be matched by the human capacity to manage them.
“If we already control our wealth, we need workers, crews, and young people who can manage that wealth. We may control it, but if we do not understand how to operate it, then education becomes extremely important,” Prabowo said.
He added that education is not only a tool to increase competitiveness but also a strategic way to break the cycle of poverty.
