JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Poso, Central Sulawesi, on Sunday morning, Aug 17, 2025, leaving 29 people injured and damaging at least one place of worship, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported.
BNPB Chief Suharyanto said in Jakarta that 13 victims were referred to Poso General Hospital, including two in critical condition, while six others received treatment at Tokorondo Community Health Center. He added that the Elim Congregation Church in Masani village sustained structural damage.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the quake occurred at 05:38 a.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located 18 kilometers northwest of Poso.
Residents in coastal districts such as Masani, Tokorondo, Towu, Pinedapa, Tangkura, and Lape reported intense shaking lasting about 15 seconds, prompting many to rush outdoors for safety. In neighboring Sigi regency, the tremor was felt for about seven seconds, but no damage or casualties were recorded.
BNPB has instructed local authorities to strengthen coordination, deploy teams to assist in the field, and ensure emergency response supplies are distributed quickly. Immediate needs identified include tents and medical supplies.
Suharyanto urged residents to remain calm but vigilant in case of aftershocks, avoid damaged structures, and keep an emergency kit prepared.
