Purbaya Optimistic Indonesia Economy Nears 6% This Year, Calls Moody’s ‘Offside’

JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said on Tuesday, Feb 10, 2026 in Jakarta that Indonesia’s economy is on track to grow close to 6% this year, citing stronger-than-expected recent data that he said contradicts Moody’s negative outlook and supports government optimism.

Purbaya said the economy expanded by 5.39% in the fourth quarter of 2025, a result he argued clearly disproved Moody’s assessment that risks of an economic slowdown were rising.

“Once the number came out at 5.39% or 5.4%, Moody’s was offside,” Purbaya said during a seminar on revitalizing Indonesia’s shipbuilding and shipping industries held by INSA, Iperindo, and Kadin Indonesia.

He added that after the growth data was released, several global financial institutions revised up their forecasts for Indonesia, including J.P. Morgan, which raised its projection to 5.2%, and the International Monetary Fund, which revised its estimate from 4.9% to 5.2%.

According to Purbaya, these revisions further underscored that Moody’s assessment had missed the mark, and he urged the public not to be overly concerned about the downgrade in outlook.

He also dismissed concerns raised by some domestic economists about a potential recession, saying the data showed real improvement rather than statistical manipulation.

“If you look at consumer confidence, it’s the same story. It was already high in December and rose again in January to an even higher level,” he said.

Purbaya stressed that the recovery was not only visible in macroeconomic indicators but was also being felt by the public, as reflected in steadily rising consumer confidence.

He added that public trust in the government and President Prabowo Subianto had also strengthened, rebounding in January after a slight dip in December and reaching the highest level recorded in the history of the survey.

“Public approval of the president is now extremely high,” Purbaya said.

With multiple indicators improving, he reiterated his confidence that Indonesia’s economic growth could be pushed to 6% this year, joking that he would ask President Prabowo for a gift if the target was achieved.
