Indonesia Maintains Trade Surplus in June 2025, but Monthly Figure Slips 4.65%
Main Takeaways

JAKARTA — Indonesia extended its streak of monthly trade surpluses to 62 consecutive months in June 2025, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), although the monthly surplus value dipped slightly from May.
The country recorded a trade surplus of $19.48 billion in June, down 4.65% from the previous month’s $20.44 billion, as reported by Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS Pudji Ismartini on Friday, Aug. 1.
“This continues our positive trade trajectory since May 2020,” Pudji said during a press briefing at BPS headquarters in Jakarta.
The June surplus was largely driven by strong performance in non-oil and gas (non-oil & gas) exports, which generated a $5.22 billion surplus. Major contributors included vegetable oils, mineral fuels, and iron and steel.
Oil and Gas Trade Still in Deficit
While the non-oil and gas segment performed robustly, Indonesia’s oil and gas trade balance remained in the red, with a $1.11 billion deficit in June, primarily due to imports of crude oil and refined petroleum products.
In the first half of 2025, Indonesia's cumulative trade surplus stood at $19.48 billion. This was supported by a substantial $28.31 billion surplus in non-oil and gas trade, offset by an $8.83 billion deficit in oil and gas trade.
Despite the deficit in energy-related trade, the shortfall narrowed by $1.27 billion compared to the same period in 2024.
Trade Partners: Gains and Gaps
By country, Indonesia booked its largest trade surpluses with the United States ($8.57 billion), India ($6.59 billion), and the Philippines ($4.4 billion) in the January–June 2025 period.
In contrast, the nation faced its deepest trade deficits with China ($9.73 billion), Singapore ($3.09 billion), and Australia ($2.66 billion).
These figures underscore the continued reliance on commodity exports for trade balance support while highlighting vulnerabilities in energy imports and structural trade imbalances with key partners like China.
