JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — Renowned artist, composer, and veteran lawmaker Mohammad Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra passed away at the age of 73 on Saturday morning, Sept. 26, 2026, prompting mourning across Indonesia's artistic and political establishments.
The youngest son of the nation's founding father and first president, Soekarno, breathed his last at the MRCCC Siloam Hospitals Semanggi in Central Jakarta at approximately 04:16 a.m. local time (WIB).
"We share this sorrowful news: Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un. Mohammad Guruh Irianto Sukarnoputra bin Sukarno has returned to the mercy of God at the age of 73," the Soekarno family announced in an official statement on Saturday morning.
The late composer and politician is laid in state at the family residence on Jalan Sriwijaya Raya No. 26 in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.
PDI-P Honors Fallen Cadre With Seven-Day Half-Mast Tribute
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) expressed deep collective grief over the loss of Guruh, who was the younger brother of party chairwoman and Indonesia's fifth president, Megawati Soekarnoputri. PDI-P Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto lauded Guruh as a rare figure who seamlessly bridged national culture with party ideology.
"The extended family of PDI-P feels a profound loss with the passing of Mas Guruh Soekarnoputra. He will always be remembered as a great artist, a devoted Marhaenist—championing the cause of the common people—and a steadfast fighter for the party," Hasto said in an official dispatch on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026.
In tribute to his decades of service, party leadership directed all echelons—from the central executive board (DPP) down to regional branches and grassroots sub-branch posts (anak ranting)—to fly the PDI-P banner at half-mast for seven consecutive days.
Prananda Prabowo, head of the PDI-P Situation Room and son of Megawati, expressed his family's gratitude for public support while requesting forgiveness for any shortcomings in Guruh's life.
"We humbly ask the public to open their hearts to forgive any mistakes and errors made by the deceased during his lifetime," Prananda said. "We ask for your prayers that he meets a blessed end, that Almighty God accepts his deeds of worship, pardons all transgressions, and grants him the highest place at His side."
The late maestro is scheduled to be laid to rest alongside his mother, national heroine and former first lady Fatmawati Soekarnoputri, at Karet Bivak Public Cemetery (TPU Karet Bivak) in Central Jakarta. Speaking at the funeral home on Saturday morning, Sept. 26, 2026, PDI-P Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto confirmed that the family is finalizing the exact burial schedule.
"Mas Guruh's body is currently resting at his residence, and the plan is for him to be buried next to Ibu Fatmawati," Hasto told reporters, adding that the extended Soekarno family is holding a private deliberation to determine the timing of the funeral service. Hasto also highlighted Guruh’s enduring institutional legacy within the party, noting that the late artist composed the official party anthem, Mars PDI Perjuangan.
A Final Battle With Declining Health
Guruh's passing followed a prolonged health battle that accelerated over the past year. Prior to his admission to Siloam Semanggi, Guruh had spent four weeks hospitalized at Medistra Hospital in South Jakarta, where his condition briefly stabilized before deteriorating.
On Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026, his nephew Didi Mahardika confirmed that Guruh had been transferred to intensive care at Siloam Semanggi in critical and unconscious condition.
"He had been in poor health for the past year," Didi told reporters on Thursday night. "After showing signs of recovery at Medistra, his condition took a turn for the worse."
While the family opted to keep specific medical diagnoses private, Guruh’s critical condition drew national concern, including direct attention from the State Palace. President Prabowo Subianto had instructed state medical teams to provide the utmost intensive care, recognizing Guruh's stature as a cultural icon and historical figure.
Decades in Art, Music, and Public Office
Born in Jakarta on Jan. 13, 1953, Guruh was the youngest child of President Soekarno and First Lady Fatmawati. Trained in traditional dance from childhood, he established himself as one of Indonesia's most influential creative visionaries, revitalizing national choreography and popular modern composition.
In the 1970s, Guruh broke musical ground by founding the avant-garde ensemble Guruh Gipsy alongside Chrisye, Keenan Nasution, and Abadi Soesman, famously fusing progressive Western rock with traditional Balinese gamelan. He subsequently founded the renowned cultural performance troupes Swara Mahardhika and GSP Production (Gencar Semarak Perkasa), which defined Indonesian stage theatrics, choreography, and musical revue throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
His compositions left an indelible mark on Indonesian pop culture, penning timeless classics performed by Chrisye, including "Kala Cinta Menggoda"—which earned him Best Pop Songwriter at the 1998 Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI)—and "Kala Sang Surya Tenggelam," which experienced a major cultural renaissance in 2023 when featured in the hit Netflix period drama Gadis Kretek (Cigarette Girl).
In recognition of his artistic contributions, Rolling Stone Indonesia named Guruh among "The Immortals: The 25 Greatest Indonesian Artists of All Time" in 2008. He was awarded the Nugraha Bhakti Musik Indonesia (NBMI) accolade by PAPPRI in 2011, received the AMI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010, and was inducted as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) by the French government in 1991.
Alongside his creative endeavors, Guruh remained deeply committed to national politics. He represented PDI-P in Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR RI) during the late New Order from 1992 to 1997, and served continuously throughout the post-authoritarian Reform era from 1999 until 2024.
