HONOLULU, Investortrust.id — Indonesia’s world-renowned surfing haven, the Mentawai Islands, has officially initiated a transpacific partnership framework with the City and County of Honolulu, seeking to forge a bilateral "Friendship City" alliance aimed at accelerating sustainable island tourism and coastal development.
Acting under an official mandate from Mentawai Islands Regent Rinto Wardana, FIABCI International Board Member Rusmin Lawin formally delivered the letter of intent to Honolulu City Council Member Matt Weyer during the observance of United Nations Habitat Day in Honolulu on Monday, Oct. 5, 2026. The diplomatic handover was witnessed by FIABCI-USA President Ritu Rani, UN Habitat Day 2026 Organizing Committee Chair Judy Ashley, and Senior Advisor Bill Endsley.
Connecting Southeast Asia’s most iconic remote surf frontier with Hawaii’s multi-billion-dollar global tourism ecosystem marks an ambitious subnational play to institutionalize high-value, low-impact economic models. By formalizing ties with Honolulu, Mentawai seeks to unlock institutional capital and policy know-how to upgrade infrastructure, manage surging eco-travel demand, and preserve vulnerable marine habitats without compromising local cultural heritage.
Two Islands Communities, One Ocean Spirit
The diplomatic overture is anchored around the guiding vision of "Two Islands Communities, One Ocean Spirit," designed to catalyze sustainable ecotourism through the convergence of blue and green economic policies.
In the official letter dated Sept. 29, 2026, Regent Rinto Wardana highlighted that both jurisdictions share deep foundational bonds centered on wave culture, fragile marine ecosystems, and ancient indigenous legacies. Home to more than 70 internationally recognized surf breaks and the indigenous Sikerei culture—distinguished by one of the world's oldest living tattoo traditions—the Mentawai archipelago mirrors Hawaii’s celebrated ocean stewardship and heritage tourism.
Through the facilitation of Council Member Weyer's office, Mentawai authorities have requested formal coordination with the Honolulu Mayor’s Office to structure bilateral exchange programs across environmental protection, water sports management, sustainable hospitality, and youth development. Regional policymakers also expressed their intention to eventually upgrade the initial Friendship City designation into a permanent Sister City covenant as bilateral initiatives mature.
