State Ministers and Banking Titans Deploy to Flores as Earthquake Response Overhauls Independence Day Plans

JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — In an unprecedented break with tradition, top economic and infrastructure ministers are bypassing Independence Day ceremonies at the Presidential Palace to deploy directly across earthquake-ravaged Flores, coordinating emergency operations and mobilizing state-backed conglomerates to stabilize the regional economy.

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian, Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo, and disaster mitigation chiefs mobilized across impacted districts following a devastating magnitude 7.7 earthquake. "We will divide tasks in the field, and tomorrow we will not attend ceremonies in Jakarta, but participate in Independence Day commemorations across various earthquake-affected regions," Pratikno stated following an emergency inter-agency coordination meeting in West Manggarai on Sunday (Aug. 16, 2026).

The mobilization demonstrates an aggressive, all-hands state intervention to safeguard business continuity and prevent systemic economic paralysis across Eastern Indonesia. By deploying sovereign capital and maintaining banking liquidity during a major humanitarian crisis, state authorities aim to de-risk critical supply chains and speed up reconstruction timelines for vital regional commerce.

State-Owned Banks Deploy Emergency Liquidity and Aid

State-owned lenders PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BBNI) and PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BBRI) moved quickly to protect banking infrastructure while routing food, clean water, and medical aid into the hardest-hit zones. Both institutions activated business continuity protocols to maintain cash flow for local merchants, evacuees, and emergency workers.

BNI confirmed that 24 of its 25 branch outlets and 65 of its 67 automated teller machines across Ende and Maumere remain fully operational. To compensate for temporary closures at its Borong sub-branch due to structural wall cracks, the lender deployed a specialized mobile "O-Branch" vehicle alongside digital transaction routing.

"In emergency response conditions, BNI is present to help fulfill the most urgent basic needs so immediate support reaches affected communities," said BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo in an official statement on Sunday.

Securing Rural Cash Corridors and Supply Chains

Microfinance powerhouse BRI deployed its emergency response wing, BRI Peduli, delivering hundreds of ready-to-eat food rations, drinking water, and essential medicines directly to frontline shelters in Maumere and Mbay. The lender is maintaining regional cash distribution by steering retail transactions through its smartphone banking platform BRImo and its vast rural network of BRILink merchant agency banking partners.

"Assistance will continue to roll out in stages as we proactively accelerate post-disaster recovery across the affected areas," noted BRI Corporate Secretary Dhanny on Sunday.

Logistical Airbridge Anchors Disaster Recovery

The central government established an integrated logistics hub at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta to consolidate heavy cargo shipments before flying aid directly to provincial operations hubs in Labuan Bajo and Maumere. National emergency personnel are prioritizing the rapid restoration of knocked-out roads, bridges, hospital facilities, power grids, and high-speed data networks.

Pratikno emphasized that unified synchronization between national agencies, regional administrations, and state corporations remains vital to prevent operational bottlenecks. The state-led task force will oversee the immediate transition from life-saving emergency relief into long-term infrastructure reconstruction.
