JAKARTA, investortrust.id – Indonesia remains steadfast in its commitment to achieving net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060, regardless of the United States’ recent withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) confirmed that the government will continue to advance its renewable energy agenda to ensure national energy security, one of the key priorities of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.
Director General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation at the Ministry of ESDM, Eniya Listiani Dewi, emphasized that the government is consistently driving the expansion of renewable energy sources to maintain energy security.
“We are striving to continuously develop renewable energy as directed by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources and in line with Presidential Decree No. 1/2025 on the Task Force for Downstream Industry and Energy Security. We remain on track to reach net zero emissions by 2060,” Eniya stated at the ESDM Secretariat in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
Concerns Over U.S. Influence on Indonesia’s Energy Transition
Eniya acknowledged that concerns have emerged about the impact of the U.S. exit from the Paris Agreement on Indonesia’s energy transition efforts. There are fears that foreign investment in Indonesia’s renewable energy projects could be affected.
“Internationally, many are questioning Indonesia’s future trajectory. However, Minister Bahlil Lahadalia has made it clear that we must move forward independently, in our own way,” Eniya said.
Expanding Renewable Energy Capacity
Indonesia has laid out ambitious plans to expand its electricity generation capacity by 100 gigawatts (GW), with 75% of that expected to come from renewable energy sources. According to Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, the government is prioritizing renewable energy as one of its 20 key strategic projects under the management of the newly established Investment Management Agency, Badan Pengelola Investasi Daya Anagata Nusantara (BPI Danantara).
President Prabowo Subianto detailed that the first wave of investment, amounting to $20 billion, will support around 20 strategic projects, including nickel, bauxite, and copper downstream industries, artificial intelligence data centers, oil refineries, petrochemical plants, food and protein production, aquaculture, and renewable energy initiatives.
