JAKARTA, investortrust.id – Xiaomi, a Chinese electronics giant, reveals a plan to expand its electric vehicle line to Indonesia and aims to build on the success of its Xiaomi SU7 model. This move signals intensifying competition in the country’s rapidly evolving EV sector and offers new opportunities for business leaders and policymakers watching the global shift toward cleaner transportation.
Xiaomi saw a positive reception in China for its first electric car, the Xiaomi SU7, which was introduced in 2024. By gaining significant traction in its home market, the company prepared to extend its automotive reach beyond consumer electronics.
In 2024, the Indonesian government introduced incentives for electric vehicles to spur growth in the local market, encouraging Chinese automakers such as Wuling and BYD to increase their presence. As a result, Indonesia became a prime target for overseas players seeking to tap into the government’s supportive policies and a growing consumer base.
Country Director Xiaomi Indonesia Wentao Zhao stated that Xiaomi’s electric car initiative was part of the company’s broader business plan for Indonesia. He noted that the company had managed to sell 180,000 units of its electric vehicle in one year in China, underscoring its strong foundation in the EV segment.
Regarding a possible launch date for the Xiaomi SU7 in Indonesia, Zhao emphasized that Xiaomi planned to roll out its EV models globally by 2027.
“We realized that every market has unique conditions, so we needed a special strategy,” he explained on Thursday, Mar 13, 2025. He also pointed out that regulatory requirements varied significantly among countries, and that Xiaomi would factor in safety considerations and infrastructure readiness before finalizing launch plans.
In Indonesia, where both domestic and international automakers compete to capture the fast-growing EV sector, Xiaomi viewed the market as a promising avenue for expansion. Yet, Zhao acknowledged that the company still needed time to develop a suitable roadmap for entry. He did not offer a specific timeline, saying that Xiaomi was in the midst of comprehensive planning.
Despite the current uncertainty, Xiaomi promised an official announcement once its plans took shape. “When the time comes, we will provide more information to Indonesian consumers,” Zhao concluded.
