Mayapada Healthcare Expands into Global Medical Services with Apollo Partnership
JAKARTA, investortrust.id – President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to India as the Chief Guest at the 76th Republic Day of India in late January 2025 marked a significant milestone for PT Sejahteraraya Anugrahjaya Tbk, or Mayapada Healthcare.
Amidst diplomatic meetings between President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, various bilateral agreements were signed, including a strategic healthcare partnership. On January 25, 2025, Mayapada Healthcare Chairman and Group CEO Jonathan Tahir signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Apollo Hospitals’ Joint Managing Director Sangita Reddy in New Delhi, India. The agreement, witnessed by Indonesia’s Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, aims to establish world-class healthcare services in Indonesia.
The partnership extends beyond healthcare infrastructure development, setting a new benchmark for international medical standards, workforce training, and technological advancements. The collaboration will materialize with the groundbreaking of Mayapada Apollo Batam International Hospital (MABIH) in April 2025.
Strategic Decision to Partner with Apollo Hospitals
In an exclusive interview with Investortrust, Jonathan Tahir explained the rationale behind choosing Apollo Hospitals for this partnership.
“Two years ago, we sought a partner for an international hospital in Batam’s Special Economic Zone (SEZ). After evaluating options, we found India to be a compelling choice. Unlike other global powers like China and the United States, India is a stable superpower with less geopolitical risk,” Tahir noted.
India’s vast population of 1.4 billion and advanced medical technology made it an ideal collaborator. Apollo Hospitals, as India’s largest private hospital network with 75 facilities and 10,000 doctors, stood out as the logical choice.
“We also saw strong diplomatic ties under President Prabowo’s administration. His rapport with Prime Minister Modi is evident, especially with his invitation as the Republic Day’s chief guest—an honor first extended to Indonesia 75 years ago when President Soekarno attended the inaugural state celebration,” Tahir added.
Implications for Indonesia’s Healthcare Sector
The MoU signing was accompanied by discussions between the Indonesian and Indian health ministries, reinforcing commitments to medical collaboration.
“The Indonesian Ministry of Health has pledged to facilitate Indian doctors’ entry into Indonesia, while the Indian government will support hands-on training for Indonesian medical professionals,” said Tahir. “This top-down momentum from both leaders ensures swift execution.”
With groundbreaking scheduled for April 2025, Mayapada Healthcare aims to accelerate healthcare improvements in Indonesia by developing medical expertise and state-of-the-art facilities.
Key Initiatives and Future Expansion
The collaboration will focus on two main areas, human capital development and infrastructure and cost efficiency. Mayapada Healthcare will send Indonesian doctors, nurses, and medical staff to India for advanced training. In return, Apollo Hospitals has committed to deploying 1,000 medical professionals to MABIH, ensuring knowledge transfer.
Batam was selected for its strategic location, attracting patients from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The SEZ status also offers cost advantages, potentially making medical services in Batam more affordable than in Jakarta.
“We aim to offer competitive medical costs, especially compared to Malaysia and Singapore. While Singapore remains a premium healthcare destination, Batam’s proximity—just a 30-minute ferry ride—makes it a compelling alternative,” Tahir explained.
Building a World-Class Medical Facility
Mayapada Healthcare has allocated Rp 1.5 trillion to Rp 2 trillion ($95 million to $127 million) for MABIH’s development. The funding, secured through internal cash reserves and a recent private equity investment from a major U.S. firm, will support a focus on cardiology and oncology, addressing the growing demand for specialized treatments. It will also be used for cutting-edge medical equipment to rival international standards.
Architectural expertise to ensure a world-class facility, potentially working with firms experienced in Apollo Hospitals’ projects.
Technology-Driven Healthcare Solutions
Mayapada-Apollo partnership includes two key technological initiatives, teleradiology services and tele-ICU monitoring. In the teleradiology services, X-ray, MRI, and CT scan results from Indonesia will be analyzed remotely in India within four hours, ensuring high accuracy and efficiency.
For Tele-ICU monitoring, Apollo’s command center, which oversees intensive care patients across its 75 hospitals, will be integrated into Mayapada’s operations to enhance critical care.
These initiatives, already in early implementation stages, will be progressively rolled out across Mayapada hospitals in Indonesia, ensuring patients benefit from global expertise.
Long-Term Strategy and Workforce Development
Recognizing the critical shortage of medical professionals, Mayapada Healthcare is investing in local workforce development.
“While Apollo provides an immediate boost, we are also expanding our nursing academies to build a sustainable talent pipeline. The key differentiator for Indian doctors is their exposure to a high volume of cases—five to ten times more than their Indonesian counterparts. By enhancing training opportunities, we can bridge this gap,” Tahir emphasized.
A Competitive Edge in Indonesia’s Healthcare Market
With rising investment in healthcare, competition in Indonesia’s medical sector is intensifying. Tahir believes Mayapada Healthcare’s partnership with Apollo provides a distinct advantage.
“Two key challenges in healthcare are rising costs and the demand for skilled professionals. Our collaboration with Apollo addresses both by ensuring a steady talent supply and operational efficiency,” he noted.
The partnership also strengthens Indonesia’s ability to retain patients who would otherwise seek treatment abroad, saving foreign exchange outflows and positioning Indonesia as a medical tourism hub.
With MABIH set to open by late 2026, Mayapada Healthcare is poised to redefine Indonesia’s healthcare landscape, making high-quality medical services accessible and affordable.
