JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — President Prabowo Subianto has officially inaugurated Djamari Chaniago as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs and Erick Thohir as Minister of Youth and Sports. The ceremony took place at the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025.
Djamari replaced Budi Gunawan, who was dismissed in the Sept. 8 reshuffle. In the interim, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin had served as acting Menko Polkam.
Erick Thohir, meanwhile, succeeded Dito Ariotedjo, who was also removed in the same reshuffle. The Menpora seat remained vacant for a week until Erick’s appointment. Erick previously served as Minister of State-Owned Enterprises before being reassigned.
The inauguration was carried out under Presidential Decree No. 96P of 2025 on the dismissal and appointment of cabinet ministers and deputy ministers. The decree was read by Nanik Purwanti, Deputy for Administrative Affairs at the State Secretariat, during a solemn swearing-in ceremony.
In their oath of office, Djamari and Erick pledged loyalty to the 1945 Constitution and vowed to uphold the highest standards of ethics and responsibility in their new roles.
Djamari Chaniago
Djamari Chaniago, born in 1949 in Sumatra Barat, brings decades of military service. He graduated from the Military Academy in 1971 and went on to serve as Commander of Kodam III/Siliwangi in 1997, Commander of the Army Strategic Reserve Command (Pangkostrad) from 1998 to 1999, Deputy Army Chief of Staff in 1999, and Chief of the Armed Forces General Staff from 2000 to 2004.
After retirement, he was active in politics as a member of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and later served as President Commissioner of PT Semen Padang from 2015 to 2016. His return to government is expected to restore stability and strengthen defense coordination at a time of shifting regional dynamics.
Erick Thohir Moves to Youth and Sports
Erick Thohir, born in Jakarta on May 30, 1970, has become the new Minister of Youth and Sports, replacing Dito Ariotedjo. Widely known as an entrepreneur and sports leader, Erick built his career through Mahaka Group, owned stakes in Inter Milan and DC United, and chaired Indonesian sports organizations.
He previously led the Indonesian Olympic Committee from 2015 to 2019, oversaw the successful 2018 Asian Games, and has chaired the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) since 2023. In government, Erick was appointed Minister of State-Owned Enterprises in 2019 under President Joko Widodo, a role he continued under President Prabowo until today’s reshuffle.
His new appointment aligns with his long-standing involvement in sports and is seen as a strategic move to link government youth initiatives with his ongoing role as PSSI chairman.
Newly Inaugurated Officials
The reshuffle formed part of a wider reorganization of the Merah Putih Cabinet under Presidential Decree No. 96B of 2025 and two additional decrees, No. 97B and No. 152TPA of 2025, covering the dismissal and appointment of senior officials across government and strategic agencies.
At the same occasion, Prabowo appointed Angga Raka Prabowo as head of the Presidential Communication Office, which has now been renamed the Government Communication Agency.
