Megawati-Prabowo Meeting Draws Closer as PDIP Attends Gerindra Anniversary
BOGOR, investortrust.id – The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), the only major political party outside President Prabowo Subianto’s ruling coalition, has officially responded to Gerindra’s invitation to its 17th-anniversary celebration, signaling a potential shift in political alliances. PDIP officials openly stated that the long-anticipated meeting between PDIP Chair Megawati Soekarnoputri and Prabowo is drawing closer.
PDIP was represented at the event by its Treasurer, Olly Dondokambey, and Senior Executive Board Member, Said Abdullah.
According to Said, Megawati had extended her congratulations to Gerindra on its anniversary, though indirectly. The message was delivered by PDIP Executive Board Member Puan Maharani.
"Through Ms. Puan, our Chairwoman conveyed her congratulations and expressed hope that under Prabowo's leadership, Indonesia will progress in the next five years, fulfilling our shared vision of a greater Indonesia," Said remarked during the event held in Sentul, Bogor, on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025.
Said also addressed speculation surrounding PDIP’s attendance at Gerindra’s anniversary and its connection to the planned meeting between Megawati and Prabowo.
"God willing, the meeting between Megawati and Prabowo is getting closer," he affirmed.
However, as Chair of the House of Representatives’ Budget Committee (Banggar DPR), Said did not disclose specific details about the timing of the meeting. He only stated that both leaders were coordinating their schedules.
"Let us all hope that the meeting happens soon," he added.
President Prabowo, who also serves as Gerindra's Chairman, expressed gratitude for PDIP's presence at the anniversary event.
"I am honored today. National leaders and political party figures from across the spectrum are here, including those in red," Prabowo stated, acknowledging PDIP’s participation.
PDIP remains the only major party outside Prabowo’s governing coalition, which is currently supported by Gerindra, Golkar, the National Mandate Party (PAN), the United Development Party (PPP), and the National Awakening Party (PKB). PDIP’s presence at Gerindra’s celebration has fueled speculation of a possible rapprochement between the two parties, which have historically had a fluctuating political relationship.
With the 2029 presidential election still years away, this developing relationship between Gerindra and PDIP could indicate shifting political dynamics in Indonesia's leadership landscape.
