Minister of Religious Affairs: Jakarta Murugan Temple Reflects Indonesia's Constitutional Values
JAKARTA, investortrust.id - The inauguration of the Jakarta Murugan Temple, also known as Shri Sanathana Dharma Aalayam, is not just the physical inauguration of a place of worship. The moment also represents the realization of human rights in practicing religious freedom, according to the Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar.
"Human rights in religious freedom are the main pillar of democracy. Every individual has the same right to practice their beliefs, without pressure or discrimination," said Nasaruddin, delivering a speech on behalf of President Prabowo Subianto at the inauguration of the Jakarta Murugan Temple in the Daan Mogot area, Kalideres, Jakarta, on Sunday, Feb 2, 2025. The President could not attend the event due to health reasons.
As a country based on Pancasila, Indonesia's foundational philosophy, Indonesia respects and protects the diversity of beliefs in society, Nasaruddin said. "Places of worship are one of the concrete forms of this guarantee," he said. Pancasila is the official, foundational philosophical theory of Indonesia, a set of five principles that guide the country's governance and the conduct of its citizens.
Guaranteeing Religious Freedom
Nasaruddin explained that the state ensures that every religious individual has a proper space to worship according to their beliefs. "In Hinduism, building a place of worship is a sacred obligation that is an integral part of dharma in supporting spiritual and social harmony," he said.
The government, said Nasaruddin, is committed to supporting and implementing Asta Cita, which is the grand vision of the Prabowo administration, including strengthening the Pancasila ideology and upholding democracy and human rights. Asta Cita refers to the eight commitments or aspirations of the Indonesian government under President Prabowo.
"As a nation based on Pancasila, religious and belief diversity is a major strength in building unity and harmony," he emphasized.
The minister hopes that the magnificent and aesthetically pleasing Jakarta Murugan Temple will enhance Indonesia's image. "This very grand, very Indian building will hopefully enhance the image of the Indonesian nation," he said.
Nasaruddin added that the Jakarta Murugan Temple could become a spiritual center for religious education and the strengthening of noble Hindu values. "With the spirit of togetherness and mutual cooperation, let us continue to maintain harmony and tolerance between religious communities in order to demonstrate a just, prosperous, and civilized society," the minister said.
