A Place of Worship and Cultural Exchange
The opening of the Jakarta Murugan Temple, located on Jl Bedugul No.2 in the Daan Mogot Baru Housing Complex, Kalideres, West Jakarta, drew Hindu worshipers from across Indonesia and neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and India.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan, a revered deity in Hindu mythology known as the son of Lord Agni. Lord Murugan is also recognized by various names, including Kartikeya, Kumara, Shanmukha, Skanda, and Subramaniam, and is revered as the God of war and the protector of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
"This temple is the largest in Indonesia," said Karthikraja, a Hindu worshiper from Batam, Riau Islands province. "I came here with my wife, family, and friends. There are about 800 people from Batam, 200 from Singapore, many from Malaysia, and around 100 priests from India."
Perumal, a worshiper from Klang, Malaysia, expressed his joy at the presence of a large temple in Indonesia. "There are many temples like this in Malaysia," he said. "This is my first time visiting a temple in Indonesia."
Usyarani, a worshiper from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, expressed her pride in the establishment of a large Murugan temple in Indonesia. "Indonesia is predominantly Muslim, so we are proud to have a large Hindu temple here," she said. "We hope that Murugan culture will become more widely known and developed in Indonesia."
She believes that attending the ceremony will bring her special blessings. Usyarani arrived in Jakarta with her older sister, Shinta, a week ago and will return to Malaysia next week.
A Symbol of Unity and Heritage
The Jakarta Murugan Temple features a sacred space that integrates Indian, Balinese, and Javanese traditions, reflecting the harmonious values of Pancasila, Indonesia's state ideology. The temple is a place of worship and a cultural center and tourist destination that introduces the diverse spiritual and cultural heritage of the archipelago.
"Hopefully, young people can learn more about Hinduism so that it is not lost," Usyarani said, highlighting the importance of the temple for future generations. The Jakarta Murugan Temple stands as a testament to Indonesia's religious diversity and its commitment to fostering a harmonious society.
