Fahri Hamzah: Qatar to Build 6 Million Homes in Indonesia
JAKARTA, investortrust.id – Deputy Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas Fahri Hamzah revealed that Qatar plans to construct a total of 6 million homes in Indonesia. This initiative stems from a prior agreement between the two nations, marking a significant step in addressing Indonesia's housing needs.
“Qatar committed to 1 million units in an earlier agreement. Following that, I met with officials from Qatar who pledged an additional 5 million units, bringing the total to 6 million homes,” Fahri said in a written statement on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
Fahri clarified that the additional 5 million units would be funded by the Qatari government, while the initial agreement for 1 million units, signed at the Presidential Palace, involved semi-government entities.
“The initial agreement was with semi-government entities. Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Thani, part of the royal family and a private investor, was involved,” he explained.
The Deputy Chairperson of the Gelora Indonesia Party emphasized Qatar’s strong commitment to aiding Indonesia’s housing sector. The project is expected to alleviate the housing deficit while generating substantial local employment opportunities.
“This additional 5 million units demonstrates Qatar's commitment to helping Indonesia meet its housing needs,” Fahri said.
He added that the plan for 6 million homes is still in its early stages, with details and mechanisms to be discussed in a bilateral meeting scheduled in Doha later this month.
“The construction scheme will be finalized during the meeting in Doha,” noted Fahri, who served as Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian Parliament from 2014 to 2019.
President Prabowo Subianto had witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on housing between Indonesia’s Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas Maruarar Sirait and Qatari investor Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Thani at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
Housing development under Prabowo's administration is among 17 priority programs. The government aims to construct 3 million homes annually, focusing on providing affordable housing for low- and middle-income families.
