JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, reports three tropical systems surrounding the country on Monday, Dec 15, 2025 in Jakarta, raising the risk of heavy rainfall and high waves as authorities intensify monitoring and preparedness measures.
The warning was delivered by BMKG head Teuku Faisal Fathani during a plenary cabinet meeting led by President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace.
Fathani said the systems consisted of Tropical Cyclone Bakung, tropical disturbance 93S, and tropical disturbance 95S. "At the moment there are three cyclones surrounding Indonesia, Mr President. The first is Cyclone Bakung," he said.
He explained that Cyclone Bakung had developed southwest of Lampung and was moving away from Indonesia, but its intensity had increased from Category 1 to Category 2. He noted that Tropical Cyclone Senyar, which previously caused extreme weather in Sumatra, was recorded only as a Category 1 system.
BMKG projected that Cyclone Bakung could still move closer to Indonesian territory and would be closely monitored over the next two to three days. "We will continue to monitor its dynamics, and we hope it does not move closer again in a way that affects rainfall," Fathani said.
BMKG also detected tropical disturbance 93S over Bali, Nusa Tenggara, and East Java, while disturbance 95S was observed south of Papua. The presence of these systems was expected to increase the likelihood of high to very high rainfall and elevated wave heights in surrounding waters.
Fathani said BMKG had coordinated with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, regional disaster offices, and the search and rescue agency to keep the public alert but calm. "We have conveyed that people should remain calm while staying prepared for heavy rainfall and high waves," he said.
He added that Indonesia was not facing the situation alone, noting its role as a tropical cyclone warning center appointed by the World Meteorological Organization. Indonesia has been coordinating closely with Australia, Japan, and India to assess the development of Cyclone Bakung.
Fathani said the system briefly reached Category 3 on Sunday, Dec 14, with wind speeds of up to 65 knots before weakening. "This was very dangerous, but it has since dropped back to Category 2 and is now expected to approach Category 1," he said.
