JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — Kilang Pertamina Internasional, the refinery and petrochemical subholding of PT Pertamina Tbk, has completed construction of four new storage tanks at its Balongan refinery in Indramayu, West Java. Each tank has a capacity of 29,000 cubic meters and has been operational since mid-2025, enhancing national energy security by improving inventory management for fuel and non-fuel products.
Acting Corporate Secretary of Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) Milla Suciyani said the expansion is a key part of the company’s strategy to strengthen refinery reliability. “Besides crude oil processing, another equally critical aspect of refinery operations is inventory management, both in terms of feedstock and the products we deliver,” she said in a statement on Monday, Sept 29, 2025.
The new tanks give Balongan greater storage capacity and flexibility to adjust supplies in line with market demand. The refinery currently operates more than 70 tanks for feedstock and product storage.
The Balongan facility is a strategic hub supplying fuel to Jakarta, Banten, and parts of West Java through pipelines and seaborne tankers. Milla emphasized that Balongan is the most complex refinery operated by Pertamina, with a Nelson Complexity Index of 11.9. “The higher the NCI, the more high-quality products a refinery can generate with greater efficiency,” she explained.
Construction of the tanks began in August 2023 and recorded more than 1 million safe working hours by June 30, 2025, with the entire workforce sourced domestically. “This project is one of KPI’s proudest achievements, as it reached over 1 million safe working hours from the beginning through June 2025,” Milla said.
In addition, KPI increased the use of local products to 58 percent, surpassing the original target of 56 percent. “We are confident that domestic products meet the standards of the oil and gas industry. This is one way for KPI to create multiplier effects for many sectors,” she added.
