JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — Bank Indonesia confirms that its Payment ID financial transaction system remains in the trial phase and will not be launched on Sunday, Aug 17, 2025.
Head of Bank Indonesia’s Payment System Policy Department Dicky Kartikoyono said on Tuesday, Aug 12, 2025, in Jakarta that the Payment ID is still operating within the sandbox, a controlled testing environment for developing software, technology, or regulatory frameworks.
Payment ID is a nine-character unique identifier generated from population data based on the National Identification Number (NIK). It is designed to consolidate an individual’s financial information, from bank accounts to e-wallets. Financial institutions must still obtain explicit consent from customers before accessing detailed profile information.
Dicky explained that Payment ID is being prepared to support the government’s plan to roll out a non-cash social assistance program in Banyuwangi, East Java, in September 2025. Its role in the program will depend on the final guidelines issued by the government.
“We are still waiting to see how we can help, based on the data available in the financial system,” he said.
As part of the regulatory design process, Bank Indonesia has engaged stakeholders to identify potential issues or vulnerabilities in the payment system. Dicky stressed that Payment ID will comply with the principles of personal data confidentiality as stipulated in the Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP).
“This is the backbone of trust in the banking business. Privacy is fully protected under the Personal Data Protection Law, and data can only be used with the owner’s consent. That’s what we are safeguarding,” he said.
According to the central bank’s assessment, Payment ID could enhance the quality of financial sector analysis, particularly in credit distribution. However, it will not replace the Financial Information Service System (SLIK) operated by the Financial Services Authority (OJK).
