National Nutrition Agency Cracks Down: Over 800 Free Meal Kitchens Shut Down in Sweeping Crackdown

JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — Indonesia’s National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has permanently shut down 833 kitchens operating under the flagship Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program, delivering a decisive blow against operational negligence and administrative corruption.

BGN Chief Sudaryono announced the sweeping suspensions during a press conference at the agency's headquarters on Monday, confirming that non-compliant service units will face immediate, total funding cutoffs. The crackdown targeting the Nutritious Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) follows widespread failures in sanitation, hygiene standards, and wastewater management system (IPAL) compliance.

"Starting today, we have suspended 833 kitchens," declared Sudaryono during a press briefing in Jakarta. "If we suspend them now, they are closed and will not be paid. This is a definitive suspension due to severe violations."

The aggressive overhaul signals a significant shift toward operational strictness for Southeast Asia’s largest social welfare expenditure initiative. By cutting off non-compliant private kitchen operators and mandating market-rate procurement from local farmers, BGN is reshaping agricultural supply chains while eliminating margin-skimming on state-subsidized consumer goods like Minyakita cooking oil, subsidized LPG, and SPHP rice.

A regional breakdown of the enforcement action reveals that the largest share of suspensions occurred across outer regions—including Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, Bali, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), and Papua—where 424 kitchens were closed. Meanwhile, Java and Madura saw 311 kitchen closures, and Sumatra accounted for 98 suspended units, bringing the nationwide total to 833 deactivated facilities.

Internal Housecleaning Sweeps Staff and Procurement

The regulatory blitz extended deep into BGN's internal ranks. The agency fired 261 non-civil servant personnel—comprising 224 general employees and 37 technical experts—following investigations into workplace misconduct, unauthorized fee collection, and participation in illegal online gambling networks.

An additional nine civil servants (ASN/PPPK) face severe disciplinary proceedings and potential termination, while 39 others received demotions and administrative penalties. Sudaryono emphasized that the internal purge was necessary to safeguard the integrity of the state program against bad actors.

"To save the majority who work diligently, those committing violations must be punished," Sudaryono asserted. "We will not allow a few individuals to tarnish the institution."

Strict Mandate on Agricultural Procurement

To protect local agricultural producers and prevent market distortion, BGN issued an explicit prohibition forbidding kitchens from utilizing price-subsidized commodities. Kitchen operators must purchase raw ingredients strictly at Government Reference Prices (HAP) to absorb local agricultural yields fairly.

Sudaryono warned that kitchens caught using subsidized retail goods will face immediate termination after an initial warning. Random field inspections across operational sites will continue indefinitely to enforce compliance across all active service points.
