Indonesia Allocates 6 GHz Spectrum for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, Accelerating High-Speed Connectivity
JAKARTA, investortrust.id – Indonesia has officially allocated the 6 GHz spectrum for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, marking a major step in improving wireless broadband capabilities. This move positions Indonesia among the first countries in the Asia-Pacific region to adopt next-generation Wi-Fi technologies, significantly boosting internet speed and capacity.
Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid stated that this policy is part of the government’s strategy to accelerate digital transformation within the first 100 days of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.
"By enabling Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 on the 6 GHz spectrum, Indonesia is making a strategic leap to enhance digital infrastructure and compete globally," Meutya said in an official statement on Saturday, Feb 8, 2025.
Faster and More Reliable Connectivity
Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 significantly improve wireless internet performance, offering speeds up to 46 Gbps for faster data transmission, lower latency, crucial for real-time applications like gaming and video conferencing
increased network capacity, supporting more connected devices in high-density areas.
These advancements will enable smoother 4K/8K video streaming, cloud computing, virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), and AI-powered automation, enhancing both consumer and enterprise applications.
"Indonesia’s digital transformation cannot wait. Allocating the 6 GHz spectrum for Wi-Fi ensures our networks are future-ready and capable of supporting next-generation technologies," Meutya emphasized.
Regulatory Framework and Device Compliance
To ensure a seamless rollout, the government has introduced two key regulations: Ministerial Regulation No. 2/2025, revising spectrum usage policies to accommodate unlicensed Wi-Fi operations in the 6 GHz band, and Ministerial Decree No. 12/2025, defining technical requirements for wireless local area network (WLAN) devices operating in this spectrum.
These regulations ensure that Wi-Fi devices using the 6 GHz spectrum will not interfere with existing licensed services, such as telecommunications and satellite communications.
Global Compliance and Industry Adoption
To align with international standards, Indonesia has designated Indonesia Digital Test House (IDTH) and the Telecommunications Device Testing Center (BBPPT) as authorized testing facilities for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 devices. However, devices certified by internationally recognized laboratories or from countries with Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRA) will be exempt from additional local testing.
"We are ensuring that all devices comply with global standards while maintaining a streamlined testing process, allowing businesses to adopt Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 more efficiently," Meutya added.
A Game Changer for Indonesia’s Digital Economy
Beyond faster internet speeds, Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 will play a crucial role in driving Indonesia’s digital economy by enabling smart infrastructure, IoT applications, and advanced AI-driven automation. Meutya emphasized that Indonesia must not only adopt cutting-edge technology but also develop local expertise and digital sovereignty.
"We don’t want Indonesia to be just a consumer of foreign technology. We must innovate and lead in our own digital transformation," she stated.
The minister called on government agencies, businesses, and academia to collaborate in building a competitive and inclusive digital ecosystem.
"We invite all stakeholders to work together to shape Indonesia’s digital future," she concluded.
