Indonesia’s Ministry of Industry Assessing Potential 100% US Tariff on BRICS Products
JAKARTA, investortrust.id – Indonesia’s Ministry of Industry is currently assessing and analyzing data and information regarding a potential policy by US President Donald Trump to impose a 100% tariff on products from BRICS countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia.
“We cannot provide details yet, as we are still in the assessment phase. The process is ongoing,” said the ministry spokesperson Febri Hendri Antoni Arif at the ministry’s office in South Jakarta on Thursday, Jan 30, 2025.
Febri stated that Kemenperin has not yet determined the potential impact of Trump’s policies on Indonesia’s manufacturing sector. Trump previously announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on countries that support the creation of a new BRICS currency or any effort to replace the US dollar as the global reserve currency.
“We need a commitment from these countries that they will not create a new BRICS currency or support any currency to replace the mighty US dollar. Otherwise, they will face a 100% tariff and must be prepared to say goodbye to selling to the incredible US economy,” Trump said recently.
The proposed tariff could significantly affect Indonesia’s trade relations with the US, particularly in key export sectors. The ministry ongoing assessment aims to evaluate the potential risks and prepare strategies to mitigate any adverse impacts on Indonesia’s economy.
