Prabowo Awarded Malaysia’s Top Honor, Anwar Ibrahim Quips: “Higher than Dato’ Seri”
JAKARTA, investortrust.id – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim humorously noted that the honorary title received by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto from Malaysia’s King, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, is higher than his own title of Dato’ Seri. Anwar made this remark during a joint press briefing with Prabowo at the Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur, on Monday, Jan 27, 2025.
Prabowo expressed his deepest gratitude for receiving the Darjah Kerabat Johor Yang Amat Dihormati Pangkat Pertama (DK I Johor) from the King of Malaysia, describing it as a great honor. "I am deeply honored to have been received by Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who presented me with a grand military ceremony and the highest honorary title from the Johor Sultanate," Prabowo stated.
In response, Anwar humorously quipped, “Higher than Dato’ Seri,” drawing laughter from the audience, including Prabowo himself.
A Testament to Long-Standing Ties
Prabowo emphasized that the award symbolizes the deep bond between him and Malaysia, particularly with the Johor royal family. He revealed that his relationship with Sultan Ibrahim spans over 45 years, dating back to their younger days when they both studied in the United States.
“Our relationship goes way back, around 45 years. When we were both young, we attended school together in America. At that time, I was still slim,” Prabowo recounted with a smile.
The President also likened his visit to Malaysia to a homecoming, recalling his childhood and schooling in the country. He shared that his family has long-standing ties with Malaysia’s founding leaders, reinforcing his emotional connection to the nation.
"My family has deep ties with Malaysia. My parents were close to the founding fathers of modern Malaysia," he remarked.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Prabowo highlighted the historical, cultural, and familial ties between Indonesia and Malaysia, emphasizing the shared heritage and interests of the two nations. "Many Malaysian leaders still have family in Indonesia. This connection should strengthen the special relationship between our two countries. We are a kindred nation with shared culture, religion, and language," he stated.
The honorary title Darjah Kerabat Johor Pangkat Pertama (DK I) carries profound historical and symbolic significance. The accolade includes a gold necklace inscribed with the name of Sultan Abu Bakar in Jawi script, symbolizing unity and excellence. Its nine-pointed star design represents leadership and camaraderie, values highly esteemed by the Johor Sultanate.
Joining a Prestigious Circle
With this honor, President Prabowo joins a distinguished group of global figures who have received the same recognition. Notable recipients include Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Saadul Khairi Waddien (1960), Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzadin Waddaulah (1969), Indonesian President Soeharto (1990), Pengiran Isteri Mariam (1997), Hamad bin Isa al Khalifa (2017), and Pengiran Muda Mahkota al-Muhtadee Billah (2023).
