Indonesia Demands Thorough Investigation into Shooting of Its Migrant Workers by Malaysian Authorities

JAKARTA, investortrust.id – Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has called for a comprehensive investigation into the shooting of five Indonesian migrant workers by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, or APMM, in Tanjung Rhu, Selangor, Malaysia. The incident resulted in the death of one Indonesian national and injuries to four others.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges a thorough investigation into the shooting carried out by APMM, including allegations of excessive use of force," Sugiono stated during a press briefing on Monday, Jan 27, 2025.
The Foreign Minister expressed deep regret over the loss of life and conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased and to those injured during the incident.
Incident Details
According to information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website, the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Kuala Lumpur is actively handling the case. Malaysian authorities, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), have confirmed the identity of the deceased—initials B, a resident of Riau Province—and noted that the body will be repatriated following the completion of the autopsy.
The KBRI is overseeing the necessary procedures for the deceased's repatriation and has also facilitated the return to their hometown. For the four injured individuals, the embassy reported that they have received medical treatment and are now in stable condition. Consular access to meet with them has been arranged for Wednesday, Jan 29, 2025.
The incident occurred on Friday, Jan 24, 2025, at around 3:00 AM local time when APMM opened fire on a vessel in the waters off Tanjung Rhu, Selangor. APMM alleged that the passengers resisted their efforts, prompting the shooting.
Diplomatic Response
In response, the KBRI in Kuala Lumpur has taken immediate action to ensure the protection of affected Indonesian nationals. A diplomatic note has been sent to the Malaysian government, urging a thorough investigation and highlighting the need to examine potential excessive use of force by APMM.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the KBRI in Kuala Lumpur remain committed to closely monitoring the progress of this case. They will continue providing consular and legal assistance to ensure the rights of Indonesian citizens are upheld within Malaysia’s legal system.
