JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — The Ministry of Industry has advanced its target for net zero emissions in the industrial sector by 10 years, from 2060 to 2050, laying out an accelerated roadmap of decarbonization strategies to meet the new deadline.
Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry Eko SA Cahyanto said the ambitious target required equally ambitious measures.
“With this acceleration, emission reductions in Industrial Processes and Production Use, particularly in the sectors that contribute the most, can be implemented quickly,” Eko said during the Annual Indonesia Green Industry Summit (AIGIS) 2025 at the Jakarta International Convention Center on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2025.
He noted that under earlier plans, emission cuts would have been limited to about 29% from the baseline. With international support, Indonesia once aimed to push that to 40%.
“Today, we believe we can meet the net zero target independently. That is why we are preparing pilot projects in one or two industrial sectors as the first step in reducing carbon emissions on our own,” Eko said.
Eko explained that the ministry, together with industrial supervisors, had begun discussions with several companies considered suitable to take part in the pilot projects.
Indonesia is among the signatories of the 2015 Paris Agreement, which set the global goal of limiting temperature rises to 1.5 degrees Celsius, or no more than 2 degrees Celsius, above pre-industrial levels by the end of the century.
The country’s commitment is outlined in its Nationally Determined Contributions. On Sept. 23, 2022, Indonesia raised its emission reduction targets, pledging a 31.89% cut through domestic efforts, up from 29%, and a 43.20% reduction with international assistance, up from 41%.
