JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — Business leaders and government officials have signed a joint commitment on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025, at the 2nd Annual Indonesia Green Industry Summit (AIGIS) to accelerate the adoption of bioplastics as a solution to the country’s mounting plastic waste crisis, which has reached 10–12 million tons annually.
The agreement was initiated by the Indonesian Sustainable Materials Association (AMBI), local bioplastics innovator Greenhope, and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). The signing was witnessed by representatives from the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas).
AMBI Chairman Tommy Tjiptadjaja emphasized that expanding bioplastics use must move swiftly if it is to make a meaningful impact on waste reduction targets. “We hope the bioplastics industry can make a concrete contribution in helping the government meet its goal of resolving the waste problem by 2029,” Tommy said.
Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono underlined that adaptive regulation is crucial for innovation. “The government cannot work alone without businesses. That is why regulations must follow innovation, not the other way around,” Diaz said.
Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stressed that accelerating green transformation in manufacturing was no longer optional but inevitable. He added that Indonesia had advanced its target for achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) in the manufacturing sector to 2050, a decade earlier than the previous goal of 2060.
“The manufacturing sector contributes 30% of greenhouse gas emissions and 40% of air pollution. That is why environmentally friendly products must be scaled up immediately so that Indonesia can remain competitive,” Agus said.
