TANGERANG, Investortrust.id — Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM) has unveiled the locally assembled bZ4X electric vehicle at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2025 in BSD City, marking the automaker’s most significant step yet in advancing domestic EV production.
President Director of TAM Hiroyuki Ueda described the launch as a landmark in Toyota’s 54-year journey in Indonesia. “This is more than just a new model launch. It is a serious step toward strengthening electrification from within the country,” Ueda said during the GIIAS Press Day on Wednesday.
Toyota’s decision to assemble the bZ4X in Indonesia is part of its broader commitment to support the national carbon neutrality target. The move is expected to lower the retail price of the EV, expand access for Indonesian consumers, and boost the local electric vehicle ecosystem through job creation and increased technological independence. Key components of the bZ4X are also manufactured domestically.
The bZ4X will be a cornerstone of Toyota’s “multi-pathway” electrification roadmap, which spans hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and even hydrogen-powered vehicles. Toyota currently dominates Indonesia’s hybrid car market, holding a 50.9% share.
In addition to the bZ4X, TAM showcased two new concept vehicles—the Urban Cruiser EV and Urban Prism—as part of its “Beyond Zero” initiative, aimed at promoting low-emission mobility and inclusive transportation. The company presented a total of 30 vehicles at this year’s GIIAS, including two heritage models: the Corolla KE20 and the first-generation “Kijang Buaya,” displayed alongside its latest electrified lineup to highlight Toyota’s evolution in the Indonesian market.
“We believe Toyota’s presence in Indonesia must carry a deeper meaning,” Ueda said. “We’re not just offering vehicles. We are helping to drive economic growth through local production, exports, and technology transfer.”
Toyota has previously exported hybrid models like the Kijang Innova Zenix and Yaris Cross to over 80 countries. With the local production of the bZ4X, the company is now setting its sights on expanding both domestic and international EV markets.
Beyond vehicle production, Toyota is working with local partners on decarbonization initiatives. Ueda emphasized that electrification should not be costly or exclusive. “The energy transition must be gradual, practical, and affordable,” he concluded.
PT Astra International Tbk (ASII), Indonesia's largest car distributors, holds a 5% stake in TAM, while Toyota Motor Corporation owns the remaining 95%.
