JAKARTA, investortrust.id – Fuel consumption across Indonesia during the 2025 Idulfitri holiday has declined compared to the previous year, as more travelers opt for electric vehicles over traditional combustion-engine cars.
The country’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources reported the trend on Friday, citing the growing penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) as a key driver behind the decline. The government noted that the shift is particularly evident in the transportation sector, where EV usage is beginning to reshape fuel demand patterns.
“Increased EV usage is one of the reasons for the drop in fuel consumption,” said Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Dadan Kusdiana at the closing ceremony of the ministry’s National Energy Post Command, held at the Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas) headquarters in Jakarta on Friday, April 11, 2025.
During the special operational period from March 17 to April 11, 2025, BPH Migas and state-owned oil and gas firm Pertamina deployed 125 fuel terminals, 7,746 gas stations, and 70 aviation refueling units. Additional infrastructure was also established in regions anticipating higher travel demand.
Director of Fuel at BPH Migas, Sentot Harijady Bradjanto Tri Putro, said that daily fuel consumption during the 2025 Ramadan and Idulfitri season increased slightly compared to regular periods, with gasoline (gasolin) up 7% and diesel (gasoil) up 19%.
However, he emphasized that compared to the same holiday period in 2024, overall fuel distribution fell. Gasoline consumption dropped 6%, aviation fuel (avtur) declined 4%, and kerosene fell 9%. Diesel was the exception, with an 11% year-on-year increase.
Gasoline distribution peaked during the outbound travel rush on March 29, 2025, with a 25.68% increase from normal levels. The return flow on April 5 saw a 19.17% rise.
For aviation fuel, the highest surge occurred on March 28 with an 11.99% increase, while the return leg on April 7 recorded a 14.41% boost in demand.
