Indonesia Courts Boeing to Establish Aircraft Component Production in Strategic Aerospace Push
JAKARTA, investortrust.id—Indonesia’s Deputy Industry Minister Faisol Riza has called on U.S. aerospace giant Boeing to establish aircraft component manufacturing facilities in the country, part of a broader push to strengthen Indonesia’s industrial capabilities and global supply chain integration.
The request follows similar appeals by the ministry for tech leader Apple to comply with domestic component certification rules by building local production sites. Indonesia, an archipelago nation, sees aerospace as a critical sector to address connectivity challenges and position itself as a player in global aviation logistics.
Riza highlighted opportunities for Boeing to expand collaboration through licensing agreements for aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities, as well as establishing aviation training centers. Industrial zones in Batam and Bintan were proposed as strategic locations for potential manufacturing hubs.
“Indonesia has Garuda Maintenance Facility and Batam AeroTechnic, which require enhanced capabilities to develop the MRO ecosystem. Boeing could support this by granting licenses to our facilities,” Riza said Friday, Jan. 24, 2025. He emphasized the need for a formal memorandum of understanding between the ministry and Boeing to advance partnerships.
The ministry noted Indonesia’s existing workforce and industrial infrastructure, including homegrown MRO providers, as proof of readiness to scale aerospace manufacturing. Separately, Setia Diarta, director-general of metal, machinery, and electronics industries, urged Boeing to support sustainable aviation fuel adoption to curb carbon emissions in air transport.
Boeing’s President for Southeast Asia, Penny Burtt, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to deepening commercial aviation ties, citing its 75-year presence in Indonesia. The government’s push aligns with efforts to attract high-value manufacturing investments, though specific plans or timelines for Boeing’s potential projects remain undisclosed.
