Government Aims for Renewable Energy to Contribute 79% of Electricity Supply

JAKARTA, investortrust.id – Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources projects that electricity generation capacity by 2060 will reach 443 gigawatts (GW), with 79% of it derived from renewable energy.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung stated that this projection is outlined in the National Electricity General Plan (RUKN) for 2025–2060, which was approved by Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia on November 29, 2024.

“The policies adopted for power plant development include the initiation of ocean current power plants in 2028–2029 and the acceleration of nuclear power plant development between 2029 and 2032,” Yuliot said during a working meeting with Commission XII of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

He explained that the development of floating solar power plants would also be intensified by utilizing reservoir areas. Additionally, rooftop solar panels and geothermal power plants, both offshore and onshore, will be further developed.

“Furthermore, the operation of existing coal-fired power plants will continue until the expiration of their power purchase agreements (PPA). Subsequently, they will transition to co-firing with biomass, complemented by carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology,” he added.
