JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — Indonesia's automotive market extended its strong rebound in June, with domestic vehicle sales jumping 33% from a year earlier as consumer demand strengthened and manufacturers prepared for the country's biggest annual auto exhibition later this month.
PT Astra International Tbk (IDX: ASII), Indonesia's largest automotive distributor and one of Southeast Asia's biggest diversified conglomerates, sold 40,235 vehicles in June, up 37% from a year earlier and 3.8% from May. The broader market reached 77,555 units, representing a 12% monthly increase and the strongest annual growth in months.
The rebound underscores improving consumer confidence in Southeast Asia's largest economy despite global economic uncertainty. For investors, the figures suggest Indonesia's automotive sector remains a bright spot for domestic consumption, while intensifying competition from Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturers is beginning to reshape market dynamics.
The data also offer an early indication of demand heading into the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026, Indonesia's flagship automotive exhibition, which industry executives expect to generate new orders and attract additional manufacturing investment.
According to data released Friday by the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), the country's automotive trade association, Astra's market share slipped to 52% in June from 56% a month earlier, despite stronger sales growth.
The decline reflected even faster expansion among non-Astra brands.
Overall, non-Astra manufacturers sold 37,320 vehicles during June, rising 22.6% from May and 28.7% from the same month last year, according to Gaikindo.
Toyota and Daihatsu Lead Astra's Portfolio
Toyota and Lexus remained Astra's largest contributors, delivering a combined 22,960 vehicles during June.
Although sales eased 8.1% from May's 24,983 units, the brands still recorded annual growth of 27.3%.
Daihatsu posted the strongest performance among Astra's core brands. Sales climbed to 14,125 units, increasing 26.8% month over month and surging 50.9% from June 2025.
Commercial vehicle maker Isuzu also strengthened its position, selling 3,070 units, up 19.5% sequentially and 68.2% year over year.
UD Trucks recorded 80 vehicle sales, rising 6.7% from May but falling 45.2% compared with a year earlier.
Despite increased competition, Astra continued to dominate Indonesia's low-cost green car (LCGC) segment—a government-backed affordable, fuel-efficient vehicle category—with an 85% market share, up from 83% in May and 73% a year ago.
Chinese EV Makers Accelerate
Outside the Astra group, Mitsubishi Motors and Fuso led non-Astra sales with 8,219 units in June, up 25.7% from May and 12.5% from the previous year.
Suzuki followed with 6,057 units, remaining broadly flat month over month while posting annual growth of 22.6%.
China's BYD and its premium sub-brand Denza continued to dominate Indonesia's pure electric vehicle segment.
Combined sales reached 5,728 units in June, soaring more than fivefold from May's 1,105 units and increasing 48.9% from a year earlier.
Even so, conventional gasoline-powered vehicles remained the backbone of Indonesia's automotive market.
BYD and Denza accounted for approximately 7.4% of June's total domestic sales, based on the reported figures and excluding smaller manufacturers not separately disclosed by Gaikindo.
GIIAS Expected to Boost Investment
Industry executives expect momentum to continue as Indonesia prepares to host the 33rd Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) from July 30 through Aug. 9 at ICE BSD City, Tangerang, west of Jakarta.
More than 60 passenger vehicle, commercial vehicle, motorcycle, and coachbuilding brands are expected to participate, alongside hundreds of automotive suppliers showcasing new technologies.
"GIIAS 2026 will become an important momentum to strengthen the growth of Indonesia's automotive industry while encouraging new domestic investment," Gaikindo Chairman Putu Juli Ardika said while announcing preparations for the exhibition.
The event is widely regarded as Indonesia's largest automotive showcase and an important barometer of consumer demand, manufacturing expansion, and foreign investment into Southeast Asia's largest vehicle market.
