JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — Indonesia and China have agreed to strengthen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on key sectors including agriculture, fisheries, and higher education. The move is part of Indonesia’s broader strategy to accelerate its national digital transformation and boost technological competitiveness.
Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid said Indonesia welcomed China’s involvement in developing AI solutions for priority areas. “We are particularly focusing on AI applications in fisheries and agriculture. We hope to receive support from China in enhancing these efforts,” Meutya said in an official statement released on Sunday.
Some agricultural lands in Indonesia have already begun piloting AI technologies, but the current implementations remain limited. Through closer collaboration with China, Indonesia aims to improve the quality and effectiveness of these tools to increase productivity in farming.
The agreement also covers digital infrastructure development and academic partnerships. Both countries committed to advancing a comprehensive cooperation framework in technology and education.
Meutya encouraged Chinese firms to form strategic relationships with local governments in Indonesia. “We are always open to partnerships with all countries, as long as they respect Indonesia’s legal frameworks,” she said.
The ministry’s Secretary General Ismail noted that efforts are underway to expand university-level cooperation, especially with Beijing-based Tsinghua University—China’s leading institution in AI and engineering. “Many of our young digital talents are currently studying at Tsinghua. We have proposed that the university open a branch in Indonesia with a focus on AI,” Ismail said.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemenkomdigi) is prepared to facilitate collaboration between Tsinghua University and local campuses to accelerate domestic mastery of AI technologies.
This initiative aligns with Indonesia’s national digital strategy, which emphasizes innovation-driven growth and talent development. The government aims to enhance the country’s global competitiveness in the tech sector.
Kemenkomdigi expressed confidence that the partnership with China will enable inclusive AI adoption and attract greater technology investments in Indonesia’s productive sectors.
