JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BBNI), Indonesia’s fourth-largest commercial lender by assets, booked a 6.02% year-on-year gain in consolidated net profit to Rp 16.15 trillion ($1.01 billion) for the nine months ended September 2026, propelled by double-digit loan growth and record operating earnings.
The state-owned lender achieved a pre-provision operating profit (PPOP) of Rp 27.5 trillion ($1.73 billion), advancing 11.6% compared to the same period in 2025 and marking the highest third-quarter operating profit in the bank's history.
BBNI's earnings illustrate the ongoing balancing act among Indonesia's top-tier banks: managing aggressive corporate and investment lending expansion while navigating narrower interest spreads. Despite a 30-basis-point compression in its net interest margin (NIM) down to 3.5%, the bank compensated through volume growth, expanding its loan market share, cutting its cost of funds, and building fee-generating digital transaction networks via its enterprise platform BNIdirect and retail app wondr by BNI.
Lending Expansion Lifts Top-Line Growth
Consolidated loan disbursements reached Rp 992.5 trillion ($62.34 billion) as of September 2026, climbing 22.2% year-on-year.
The credit expansion drove gross interest income to Rp 60.00 trillion ($3.77 billion), up 17.28% from Rp 51.17 trillion during the prior-year period. However, broader financial conditions kept interest expenses elevated at Rp 26.77 trillion ($1.68 billion), up from Rp 21.91 trillion.
Net interest income (NII) climbed 13.62% year-on-year to Rp 33.24 trillion ($2.09 billion), supported by transactional funding growth. Current account and savings account (CASA) deposits rose 19.6% year-on-year to Rp 733.7 trillion ($46.09 billion). Low-cost deposit acquisition helped lower the lender's overall cost of funds (CoF) to 2.77% from 2.83%.
"In the midst of a challenging market environment, BNI continues to maintain growth momentum by prioritizing prudence and risk discipline," BNI President Director Putrama Wahju Setyawan stated in an official release on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026. "Our focus is to reinforce business fundamentals and operational productivity to deliver sustainable, high-quality growth."
BBNI Finance and Strategy Director Hussein Paolo Kartadjoemena noted that the bank pursued selective lending across priority industry corridors, enabling BBNI to lift its nationwide credit market share by 113 basis points year-on-year to 10.6%. The expansion came despite an adjustment in lending yields from 7.3% down to 6.9%, which contributed to net interest margin compression.
Fee-based income grew 8.3% year-on-year to Rp 13.9 trillion ($873.13 million), supported by Rp 8.44 trillion in commission and fee revenue alongside Rp 1.24 trillion in investment gains from associated entities.
Asset Quality and Provision Buffers
Underlying loan book health strengthened across key metrics. BBNI's gross non-performing loan (NPL) ratio improved to 1.9% at the end of September 2026, down from 2.0% a year earlier. The loan-at-risk (LaR) metric dropped to 7.8% from 10.4%.
Loan-loss provisions climbed to Rp 7.26 trillion ($456.03 million) from Rp 6.12 trillion, reflecting conservative risk mitigation. The bank's total provision-to-loan ratio stood at 3.8%—outpacing the domestic industry average of 3.5%—while its NPL coverage ratio reached 193.3%.
Operating expenses rose to Rp 24.20 trillion ($1.52 billion) from Rp 21.83 trillion, leaving the bank with an operating profit of Rp 20.28 trillion ($1.27 billion), up 9.29% year-on-year. Pre-tax profit climbed to Rp 20.15 trillion ($1.27 billion).
Of the Rp 16.15 trillion in headline nine-month net income, Rp 16.12 trillion was attributable to the owners of the parent entity, while non-controlling interests accounted for Rp 32.24 billion.
Digital Transaction Volumes Expand
The bank reported sustained migration toward its digital platforms. Registered users on its consumer application, wondr by BNI, expanded 58% year-on-year to 16.6 million users through September 2026, with transaction values jumping 25% to Rp 1,774 trillion ($111.43 billion).
On the wholesale front, corporate cash management platform BNIdirect processed Rp 9,324 trillion ($585.68 billion) in transaction volume, marking a 16% annual advance across 293,000 corporate clients.
BBNI maintained strong solvency and funding liquidity ratios entering the final quarter of the year, with a loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) of 87.9%, a liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) of 143.4%, and a net stable funding ratio (NSFR) of 128.4%. The bank's capital adequacy ratio (CAR) held firm at 19.2%.
