JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — Bank Indonesia (BI) is aggressively expanding nationwide adoption of its unified digital payments network, aiming to lift registered users of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) to 69.32 million by the end of 2026.
The ambitious target represents a 20.26% year-on-year acceleration as Southeast Asia’s largest economy shifts everyday consumer commerce away from physical cash. The expansion builds on a rapidly growing vendor base, with active QRIS merchants climbing 13.83% annually to reach 47.11 million retail points nationwide.
"We are targeting QRIS users to reach 69.32 million by the end of this year, growing 20.26% on an annual basis," Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti announced during the joint opening ceremony of the Indonesia Digital Financial Economy Festival (FEKDI) and Indonesia Fintech Summit & Expo (IFSE) 2026 at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC) on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026.
Expanding State Payment Instruments
Destry noted that the central bank is simultaneously broadening adoption of the domestic sovereign credit instrument, Kartu Kredit Indonesia (KKI). Following its debut in August 2026, the total volume of government and institutional credit cards offered, issued, and activated reached 32,457 units.
The initiative forms part of a broader regulatory push to restructure the national payment ecosystem into a more competitive, resilient, and transparent digital architecture.
Adoption of the National Open API Payment Standard (SNAP)—a unified protocol standardizing application programming interfaces across commercial banks and fintech firms—is also expanding rapidly. In August 2026 alone, transaction volume routed through the SNAP gateway touched 2.69 billion transactions, surging 67.16% compared to the same period last year.
Upgrading Core Clearing Rails
To absorb skyrocketing digital volumes, Bank Indonesia is overhauling its real-time retail transfer infrastructure, BI-FAST. Retail clearing volume handled by the platform climbed 37.72% year-on-year to 549 million transactions.
"Going forward, we will develop a New BI-FAST that is scalable and modular, modernize the BI-RTGS wholesale transfer system, and strengthen fundamental infrastructure to maintain transactional resilience and integrity," Destry said.
Destry emphasized that realizing these structural milestones requires seamless coordination across the financial sector and public institutions. Bank Indonesia plans to participate fully in the "Sinergi Merah Putih" cross-sector framework, aligning regulators, commercial tech providers, and consumers to unlock the government's broader economic growth objectives.
