Indonesia Mobilizes 64 Aircraft and 54,000 Troops to Contain Peatland Wildfires Meta

JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — The Indonesian government has mobilized a massive joint emergency operation, deploying dozens of aircraft and tens of thousands of ground personnel to contain spreading forest and land fires across the archipelago. The response pairs intensive aerial water-bombing sorties with on-the-ground containment lines to suppress active blazes, prevent fire perimeters from advancing, and protect nearby communities from toxic haze pollution.

Seasonal forest and peatland fires (karhutla) across Southeast Asia’s largest archipelago pose severe environmental, public health, and economic hazards. Burning peat deposits release vast volumes of trapped carbon, generate transboundary smoke that disrupts air travel and trade, and trigger regional diplomatic friction. Rapid, large-scale containment is critical to safeguarding local communities, maintaining air quality standards, and protecting carbon-rich tropical peat ecosystems from irreversible degradation.

Cabinet Secretariat Outlines Massive Mobilization

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya confirmed the scale of the state intervention in an official statement on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, noting that frontline units are operating across both air and ground corridors.

"Everything is being deployed to extinguish the flames, reduce the impact of smoke, and most importantly, protect the public from the threat of forest and land fires," Teddy stated on Sunday. Teddy acknowledged that the sheer geographic dispersion of the fire clusters and the complex makeup of combustible peat terrain present severe logistical barriers for response units.

"The vastness of the territory and the difficult conditions of peatlands pose substantial challenges in managing forest and land fires across various regions of Indonesia," Teddy said. "Nevertheless, extinguishing efforts continue unabated through both ground and aerial operations."

Aerial Sorties and Ground Reinforcements

To suppress active flare-ups in remote expanses, authorities have deployed 64 aircraft dedicated to aerial water bombing since August 2026. The aviation fleet includes 55 planes and helicopters operated by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), supported by nine military aircraft from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). Backing the aerial bombardment, a coordinated ground force of 54,394 joint personnel is working directly on the fire lines.

The ground deployment integrates active-duty soldiers from the TNI, personnel from the National Police (Polri), specialized forest rangers from the Ministry of Forestry, BNPB teams, Regional Disaster Mitigation Agencies (BPBD), specialized Manggala Agni firefighting brigades, accredited volunteer squads, and local community members.

"Since August, 64 aircraft have been deployed to execute water-bombing runs, supported by 54,394 joint personnel who continue to move across the field, reaching active fire clusters and preventing flames from spreading further," Teddy noted.
