JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — Volatile staple food costs are pressuring consumer wallets across Southeast Asia’s largest economy, as fresh statistical data shows price upticks for strategic kitchen staples broadening into more than 130 urban and rural centers.
The national statistics bureau, BPS, issued a warning on Monday over the price trajectory of rice and bird's eye chili, signaling renewed pressure on headline inflation and retail household purchasing power.
Food accounts for a disproportionately large share of emerging-market household expenditure baskets, making staples like rice and chili the single largest domestic catalysts for cost-of-living anxiety.
Persistent price flare-ups in volatile food items threaten to sap discretionary consumer demand across retail, automotive, and fast-moving consumer goods sectors while constraining the central bank's room to loosen monetary policy.
Rice Inflation Spreads Across 132 Districts
Addressing a nationwide regional inflation control coordination meeting online on Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, BPS Director of Price Statistics Sarpono highlighted that core pantry staples are already trading at elevated baselines.
"The price levels for rice and cooking oil are already relatively high," Sarpono stated during the virtual coordination session on Monday. "A price increase in rice across more than 130 regions demands serious attention because its impact on inflation and real household purchasing power is far larger than that of other food commodities."
At the provincial level, Gorontalo saw the sharpest regional rice price development index jump at 7.96%, led by a 13.01% surge in Bone Bolango regency and a 9.70% rise in Pohuwato.
On a national aggregate level, medium-grade rice climbed 0.27% in the third week of August compared to July 2026, while premium-grade varieties gained 0.23%.
Regional dynamics remain mixed, with 10 provinces—including Southwest Papua, West Sumatra, West Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, and East Kalimantan—recording localized declines in their rice price indices as harvesting and distribution vary widely.
Chili Price Disparities Expose Logistics Gaps
Alongside rice, fresh spices are experiencing volatile seasonal swings, with national bird's eye chili prices surging 3.60% month-to-date across 182 administrative regions, representing over 50.5% of the country.
Inter-island logistics bottlenecks have triggered extreme price disparities across the archipelago, with retail prices ranging from a low of Rp 23,000 per kilogram ($0.66 per pound) to an eye-watering high of Rp 200,000 per kilogram ($5.71 per pound).
In outer frontier islands such as Malaka and Natuna regencies, bird's eye chili prices spiked 40.35% and 38.68% above the government's official reference selling price (HAP).
Beyond Java and Sumatra, volatile chili costs joined commercial broiler chicken and beef as the primary contributors pushing up regional price pressure gauges.
Meanwhile, national red chili prices increased 0.91% to reach an average of Rp 48,115 per kilogram ($1.37 per pound) across 170 districts, remaining temporarily below the statutory reference price ceiling of Rp 55,000 per kilogram ($1.57 per pound).
