Every day, millions of Indonesians unlock an Android phone, search Google, navigate with Maps, collaborate on Google Docs, learn on YouTube, join meetings on Google Meet, and communicate through Gmail.
For most people, these products have become so woven into daily life that they are almost invisible. They are simply part of the digital routine—tools that help students complete assignments, entrepreneurs run businesses, families stay connected, and workers navigate an increasingly online world.
Yet behind these familiar applications lies a much larger story.
Over the past two decades, Google has quietly helped lower the cost of participating in the digital economy. It did not achieve this simply by building successful products. Rather, it created platforms that millions of people, businesses and developers could build upon, making powerful digital capabilities available to anyone with an internet connection, regardless of geography or income.
At a time when Indonesia is entering the next phase of its digital transformation, that distinction deserves closer attention. The future will not be shaped solely by companies that introduce the newest technologies or the most sophisticated artificial intelligence models. It will increasingly be shaped by those willing to help countries develop their own digital capabilities, strengthen local ecosystems and leave behind knowledge that continues creating value long after individual products have evolved.
For Indonesia, that raises an important question. In an era where global technology companies compete aggressively for users, cloud workloads and AI leadership, what should a country expect from its technology partners? Is success measured simply by the number of Indonesian users a platform attracts, or should it also be measured by how much capability that company helps Indonesia build for itself?
That distinction may well define the next chapter of Indonesia's digital economy.
More Than a Portfolio of Products
When people think about Google, they naturally think about the products they use every day.
Search transformed access to information. Google Maps changed how people navigate cities, discover businesses and plan their journeys. YouTube democratized publishing by giving anyone with a smartphone the opportunity to educate, entertain or build an audience without owning a television station or publishing house. Android fundamentally reshaped the mobile industry by enabling manufacturers around the world to build affordable smartphones, bringing the internet within reach of billions who might otherwise have remained excluded from the digital economy.
The same philosophy extends across Google's wider ecosystem. Gmail made world-class communication freely accessible. Chrome accelerated access to the web. Google Docs, Sheets, Drive and Meet brought enterprise-quality collaboration to students, startups and small businesses without requiring expensive software licenses. Google Translate lowered language barriers that had long separated markets and cultures. Google Classroom expanded access to education, while Google Play created a marketplace through which developers from every corner of the world could reach global audiences.
Individually, each of these products solved a practical problem. Collectively, however, they reveal something far more significant. Google's greatest contribution has not been any single application, but a consistent philosophy of lowering the barriers that once prevented ordinary people from participating in the digital economy. It reduced the cost of finding information, publishing ideas, collaborating with colleagues, learning new skills and launching businesses. In doing so, it helped democratize access to technology itself.
That philosophy has become so embedded in modern digital life that it is often overlooked. Yet it represents one of the defining characteristics of Google's contribution to the global internet: not simply creating successful products, but expanding access to digital opportunity on an unprecedented scale.
Building Platforms That Others Can Build Upon
Perhaps Google's most enduring contribution has been its willingness to build platforms rather than merely products.
Android's success, for example, was never simply about smartphones. Through the Android Open Source Project, Google enabled hundreds of manufacturers to innovate on a common technological foundation instead of locking the industry into a single proprietary ecosystem. Affordable Android devices became the gateway through which billions of people—including millions of Indonesians—first connected to the internet.
The same philosophy can be seen across Google's broader technology portfolio. TensorFlow accelerated artificial intelligence research by making sophisticated machine learning tools openly available to researchers and developers worldwide. Kubernetes fundamentally changed cloud computing by becoming the global standard for container orchestration. Flutter simplified application development across multiple operating systems. Firebase allowed startups to launch sophisticated digital services without first investing heavily in backend infrastructure. Chromium shaped the evolution of modern web browsers, while the Go programming language became one of the preferred tools for building scalable digital systems.
Each of these technologies follows the same pattern. Rather than concentrating innovation within Google's own products, they enable innovation across entire ecosystems. Developers, universities, startups and enterprises are able to create value more quickly because foundational technologies have already been made available.
This approach fundamentally changes the economics of innovation. Instead of every company reinventing the wheel, entrepreneurs can focus on solving real problems. Instead of investing scarce resources in building basic infrastructure, startups can direct their attention toward serving customers and developing new ideas.
For emerging economies such as Indonesia, this matters enormously. Innovation becomes less dependent on access to large amounts of capital and more dependent on access to knowledge, talent and open technological foundations. In that sense, Google's greatest contribution may not be the technologies it built itself, but the innovations it made possible for others.
Indonesia's Next Digital Chapter
Indonesia's digital transformation is entering a fundamentally different stage.
The first chapter focused on connecting people to the internet. The second witnessed the rapid expansion of e-commerce, digital payments, fintech and mobile applications that changed the way Indonesians communicate, shop and conduct business. The next chapter, however, is far more ambitious. It is about building national capability in artificial intelligence, Digital Public Infrastructure, cloud computing, cybersecurity, digital identity, semiconductors and the advanced skills needed to compete in a rapidly changing global economy.
These are no longer simply technology initiatives. They are national development priorities.
Countries that master these capabilities will increasingly determine their own economic future. Those that merely consume technologies developed elsewhere risk becoming dependent on digital ecosystems they do not control.
That is why Indonesia's vision of Indonesia Emas 2045 is about far more than economic growth. It is about building a resilient, innovative and technologically capable nation able to compete globally while ensuring that the benefits of digital transformation are shared widely across society.
This is precisely where the role of technology partners becomes critical. The question should no longer be which companies offer the most attractive products. It should be which companies are prepared to help Indonesia strengthen its own capacity to innovate, educate, build institutions and create opportunities for future generations.
From Open Platforms to Open Networks
Seen in this context, Google's support for open digital ecosystems is not a recent strategic shift. It is the natural extension of a philosophy that has shaped the company since its earliest days: technology creates its greatest value when it lowers barriers, expands participation and enables others to innovate.
That same philosophy now underpins a new generation of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Around the world, governments are increasingly recognizing that the next stage of digital transformation cannot depend entirely on proprietary platforms operating in isolation. Instead, countries are investing in shared digital infrastructure that allows businesses, governments and citizens to interact through common standards, much as roads, ports and telecommunications networks enabled economic growth in previous generations.
India's Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is one of the most ambitious examples of this thinking. Rather than creating another e-commerce marketplace, ONDC created an open network where buyers, sellers, logistics companies, payment providers and technology platforms can interoperate regardless of which application they choose to use. Competition shifts away from owning customers toward providing better products, better services and better innovation.
Indonesia is now taking a similar path through the Indonesia Open Network (ION). Inspired by ONDC and built on the Beckn 2.0 architecture, ION seeks to establish an open and interoperable commerce network where MSMEs, cooperatives, logistics providers, financial institutions and digital applications can participate through shared standards rather than isolated digital silos. The objective is not to replace existing marketplaces or applications, but to create a digital infrastructure that allows all of them to connect more efficiently while giving businesses greater freedom over how they reach customers.
For Indonesia's more than 30 million micro, small and medium enterprises, the implications are profound. Digital participation should no longer depend on joining a single dominant platform. A coffee cooperative in Aceh, a furniture manufacturer in Jepara, a fisheries business in Maluku or a batik producer in Pekalongan should be able to access buyers, logistics, payments, financing and digital services through an open network that encourages competition rather than dependence. That vision aligns closely with Indonesia's broader objective of ensuring that digital transformation benefits not only large corporations and urban centers, but entrepreneurs and communities across the entire archipelago.
Google's willingness to support these kinds of open ecosystems is therefore entirely consistent with its long-standing approach to technology. It reflects an understanding that digital infrastructure becomes more valuable when it empowers an ecosystem rather than a single platform. In an increasingly interconnected digital economy, enabling collaboration may ultimately prove more valuable than controlling it.
The Difference Between Presence and Participation
Indonesia has become one of the world's fastest-growing digital economies, making it a priority market for virtually every global technology company. Millions of Indonesians use international search engines, social media platforms, cloud services and artificial intelligence tools every day. From a commercial perspective, Indonesia represents one of the most attractive digital markets in Asia.
But there is an important distinction between serving a market and participating in its development.
Many global technology companies deliver outstanding products to Indonesian users through cross-border digital services. Their platforms are widely adopted, their technologies are highly innovative and their influence on daily life is undeniable. Yet the next phase of Indonesia's digital journey demands something more than products alone. It requires long-term partnerships that contribute to the country's own capability to innovate, educate, build institutions and develop talent.
Over the past two decades, Google has increasingly demonstrated that broader commitment. Beyond its commercial products, the company established a long-term presence in Indonesia, invested in local teams, nurtured developer communities, partnered with universities and collaborated with government agencies on digital literacy, online safety and workforce development. Through Google.org, it has supported education, nonprofit organizations, digital resilience and initiatives that help communities adapt to a rapidly changing technological landscape.
These investments rarely attract the same attention as new product launches or advances in artificial intelligence. They do not generate immediate headlines, nor are they easily measured by quarterly financial results. Their value becomes apparent over time, as more developers build successful businesses, more students acquire digital skills, more startups emerge and more institutions strengthen their technological capabilities.
That is the difference between corporate presence and genuine participation. One focuses primarily on serving customers. The other contributes to strengthening the ecosystem in which those customers live and work.
As Indonesia continues building its digital economy, this distinction will become increasingly important. Countries seeking long-term technological competitiveness will naturally gravitate toward partners willing to invest not only in market growth, but also in national capability.
Building Toward Indonesia Emas 2045
Indonesia's aspiration to become one of the world's leading economies by 2045 will not be achieved simply through higher GDP or faster internet connections. Success will depend on whether the country develops the institutions, talent, research capability and digital infrastructure needed to compete in an increasingly knowledge-driven global economy.
Artificial intelligence, Digital Public Infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing, cloud computing, cybersecurity and advanced digital skills are rapidly becoming the essential building blocks of national competitiveness. Just as roads, ports and electricity defined industrial development during the twentieth century, digital infrastructure will increasingly define economic opportunity in the twenty-first.
Government cannot build this future alone. Nor can the private sector, universities or startups acting independently. Achieving the ambitions of Indonesia Emas 2045 will require an ecosystem in which public policy, private enterprise, academia and technology partners work together to expand opportunity and strengthen national capability.
This is perhaps the broader lesson from Google's long engagement with Indonesia. Its greatest contribution may not be any individual product, platform or technological breakthrough, but a consistent philosophy of lowering barriers, expanding access and enabling others to innovate. That philosophy mirrors Indonesia's own digital ambitions: creating an economy where technology empowers everyone—not only those with the largest balance sheets, the greatest market power or the deepest technical expertise.
Technology companies often describe countries as markets. Indonesia should expect something more. It should seek partners that view the country as a place to build, invest and innovate together over the long term. The companies that contribute most to Indonesia's future will not necessarily be those with the largest market share, but those whose investments leave the strongest foundations upon which others can continue to build.
If Indonesia succeeds in realizing its vision of Indonesia Emas 2045, history is unlikely to remember which applications dominated downloads or which artificial intelligence model generated the most headlines. It will instead remember those partnerships that helped strengthen the country's capacity to innovate, compete and prosper on its own terms. Ultimately, the enduring measure of a technology partner is not how much value it extracts from a nation, but how much capability it leaves behind.
