Electric Two-Wheeler Push Gets $188.7 Million Boost as New Subsidies Target Supply-Side Bottlenecks
Key Takeaways

JAKARTA, Investortrust.id — The Indonesian government is deploying a massive Rp 3 trillion ($188.7 million) incentive program to fast-track the adoption of one million electric motorcycles.
Under the fresh stimulus framework, consumers will receive a direct purchasing subsidy of Rp 3 million ($188.70) per vehicle. The move represents the financial engine behind the ambitious green mobility roadmap set by President Prabowo Subianto.
Southeast Asia's largest economy is aggressively pivoting toward electrified transport to slash costly crude oil import bills and build a vertically integrated domestic supply chain. However, execution risks remain elevated as early-stage manufacturing bottlenecks threaten to slow capital deployment across the regional automotive sector.
Production Bottlenecks Threaten Targets
Despite the capital injection, fiscal authorities warn that local factory floors cannot yet meet the government's ambitious volume goals.
"It certainly won’t run out this year when we look at the data. The budget is Rp 3 trillion," Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa stated on the sidelines of the Karya Kreatif Indonesia (KKI) 2026 exhibition at the Jakarta Convention Center on Thursday (20/8/2026).
Purbaya pointed out that domestic assembly lines are still scaling up and currently lack the capacity to deliver seven-figure unit volumes within the current calendar year.
"National motorcycle production capacity hasn’t reached one million yet. Some players only produce 20,000 units. I think we will hit around 100,000 units at most by the end of the year," Purbaya added.
Higher Per-Unit Subsidies on the Table
To prevent the allocated funds from stalling, the Ministry of Finance is actively evaluating adjustments to sweeten the incentive package for buyers.
"I will consider later whether the subsidy per unit can be increased," Purbaya noted regarding potential adjustments to jumpstart retail momentum.
The initiative expands on the national clean mobility agenda unveiled by President Prabowo Subianto during his address at the DPR/MPR building in Jakarta on Friday (14/8/2026). The administration's triple mandate aims to lower consumer transportation costs, curb fuel import dependencies, and establish an end-to-end industrial manufacturing ecosystem across the archipelago.
